India: SC to hear pleas seeking action against NRI husbands deserting wives

New Delhi, Mar 22 (PTI) The Supreme Court Monday said it would hear in July the pleas seeking mandatory arrest of NRI husbands for deserting their wives and harassing them for dowry.

A bench of Chief Justice Bobde and Justices AS Bopanna and V Ramasubramanian was told by senior advocate Colin Gonsalves, appearing for the petitioner group of women, that pleading has been completed in the matter and he is ready to argue the case.

The bench said it is listing the matter for July.

Palestine: Hamas urges Turkish MPs to oppose Israeli demolitions

22 Mar 2021; MEMO: The leader of the Palestinian group Hamas on Saturday urged Turkish lawmakers to oppose Israeli "crimes," referring to the demolition of Palestinian homes in Jerusalem, reported Anadolu Agency.

Visiting the city of Istanbul for official talks, Ismail Haniyeh and other senior members of the group met Turkish officials and legislators, including Hasan Turan, the head of the Turkey-Palestine Parliamentary Friendship Group.

Palestinians in Saudi call on Abbas to save them from 'slow death'

22 Mar 2021; MEMO: More than 150,000 Palestinians living in Saudi Arabia have sent a letter to Palestinian Authority (PA) President Mahmoud Abbas to save them from a "slow death" in the kingdom, Aram news network reported yesterday.

The Palestinians submitted the letter to their embassy in the kingdom and called for Abbas to either help solve their outstanding issues or repatriate them to Palestine from where they were displaced.

Only 4% of Gaza household have access to safe water

22 Mar 2021; MEMO: A recent study has found that only four per cent of households in the Gaza Strip have access to safe water, compared with 39.5 per cent in the rest of Palestine.

According to a study released by the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics (PCBS) and the Palestinian Water Authority yesterday and reported by the Wafa news agency, 66.2 per cent of Palestinian households in the occupied West Bank have access to safe water.

USA: Donations pour in for families of Atlanta terror attack victims

Washington, Mar 22 (AP-PTI) Shortly after his mother was killed in the Atlanta-area shootings, Randy Park launched a GoFundMe page asking for USD 20,000 to pay for funeral expenses. By Sunday, the donations were approaching USD 3 million.

With many people seeking a way to support the families of the dead, Park's page and others have offered an outlet for tens of thousands of donors, and the accounts have surpassed their goals only days after they were opened.

India: Fire breaks out in protesting farmers' tent at Singhu border

New Delhi, Mar 20 (PTI) A fire broke out in a tent at Delhi's Singhu border where farmers have been protesting the Centre's three agri laws, the Samyukta Kisan Morcha claimed on Saturday.

Sukhwinder Singh, a protester, said the incident took place around 10 am near an under-construction flyover where the tent was put up.

However, there was no official word about the incident from the police or the fire department.

USA: Rallies in Atlanta, nation against hate after spa terror attack

ATLANTA (AP) — A diverse crowd gathered Saturday near the Georgia state Capitol to demand justice for the victims of recent shootings at massage businesses and to denounce racism, xenophobia and misogyny.

Hundreds of people of all ages and varied racial and ethnic backgrounds gathered in Liberty Plaza in Atlanta, and in similar rallies across the country, waving signs and chanting slogans.

In Atlanta, they cheered U.S. Sens. Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff, and Georgia state Rep. Bee Nguyen, the first Vietnamese American to serve in the Georgia House.

Egypt slams Western powers for comments on human rights situation

19 Mar 2021; MEMO: The Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs responded to a statement issued by a number of countries at the UN Human Rights Council criticising Cairo's human rights records by issuing a counter-statement criticising what it alleges to be human rights violations in the countries that issued the statement.
