ICC mulls probing Israel demolition of Palestinian homes in Jordan Valley

13 Aug 2021; MEMO: The International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague is examining the possibility of opening an investigation into Israel's demolition of the homes of dozens of Palestinians in the village of Khirbet Humsa in the occupied Jordan Valley.

The investigation comes in response to a petition titled "Israel Practices a War Crime" filed by the Combatants for Peace organisation; which includes former Israeli soldiers and Palestinians who are working together to end the Israeli occupation.

Greece abandons asylum seekers, exposed to elements on uninhabited island

13 Aug 2021; MEMO: The Turkish Coast Guard rescued a group of asylum seekers who were abandoned by a Greek Coast Guard boat on an uninhabited Turkish island, said an official statement on Sunday, Anadolu Agency reported.

The Greek boat dropping off the asylum seekers on the Mediterranean island of Basak, near the coastal town of Kas in the Antalya province, was seen by drones assisting in local firefighting efforts, the National Defense Ministry said.

India: Three held in e-rickshaw driver's thrashing case in Kanpur

Kanpur: The police plunged into action after a video of Hindutva goons thrashing a Muslim e-rickshaw driver  surfaced on social media, where the mob can be seen forcing the man to chant Jai Shree Ram.

Several teams were formed to identify and nab the culprits, and police was quick to arrest three of the goons.

A dharna was staged outside the DCP office here on Thursday night.

The accused are aged between 25 and 30 years. They are said to be residents of the Barra area in the city.

Israel to approve 2,200 new settlement units in occupied West Bank

12 Aug 2021; MEMO: Israeli authorities are planning to approve the construction of 2,223 new housing units for settlers in Jewish-only settlements built in the occupied Palestinian West Bank, media sources revealed yesterday.

The government is also planning to advance construction of 863 housing units in Palestinian villages in 'Area C' of the West Bank for the first time in years, Israeli TV Channel 12 and Haaretz newspaper reported.

EU should support Turkey ahead of Afghan migrant influx, Greece

12 Aug 2021; MEMO: Greek Migration Minister Notis Mitarachi said yesterday that the EU should offer more support to help Turkey mitigate the pressures of more migrant arrivals from Afghanistan as the bloc could not absorb another crisis such as the one faced in 2015, Reuters reports.

Mitarachi said the EU is not ready and does not have the capacity to handle another major migration crisis.

"It would lead to more people trying to leave and come to the EU," Mitarachi said.

Palestine slams Israel settlement project around Ibrahimi Mosque in occupied West Bank

12 Aug 2021; MEMO: Palestinian Prime Minister Muhammad Shtayyeh yesterday condemned Israel's plans to expropriate Palestinian lands and expand Jewish settlements around the Ibrahimi Mosque in occupied Hebron, the official Palestinian news agency Wafa reported.

Shtayyeh called on "the international community to take urgent action to stop these violations and stop work at the Ibrahimi Mosque."

Jerusalem Mufti calls for rejecting Judaisation projects at Ibrahimi Mosque

11 Aug 2021; MEMO: Palestinian Mufti of Jerusalem Sheikh Mohammed Hussein yesterday called for rejecting the Judaisation projects at the Ibrahimi Mosque in the occupied West Bank city of Hebron.

In a statement, the Mufti said that the Israeli occupation is planning to build passages, corridors and install an elevator in order to facilitate settler access to the mosque.
