UN: Afghanistan is world’s most repressive country for women: Pakistan

ISLAMABAD (AP) — Since the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan, the country has become the most repressive in the world for women and girls, deprived of many of their basic rights, the United Nations said Wednesday.

In a statement released on the International Women’s Day, the U.N. mission said that Afghanistan’s new rulers have shown an almost “singular focus on imposing rules that leave most women and girls effectively trapped in their homes.”

3,000 Afghan Refugees Returned From Pakistan

KABUL, Mar 7 (NNN-ANA) – A total of 3,000 Afghan refugees returned to Afghanistan from neighboUring Pakistan yesterday, said a statement by Afghanistan’s Ministry for Refugees and Repatriation Affairs, released here today.

According to the statement by the ministry, the process of returning the refugees to Afghanistan continues.

More than 2.5 million registered Afghan refugees, reportedly have been living in Pakistan, and about the same number are living in Iran.

More than 270,000 Afghan refugees have returned from Iran over the past six months.

India's Adani Group pre-pays over $900 million worth share-backed financing

BENGALURU, March 7 (Reuters) - Embattled Indian conglomerate Adani Group said it prepaid share-backed financing of 73.74 billion rupees ($901.16 million), as it looks to allay fears over leverage and debt since a U.S. short seller's critical report sparked a stock rout.

Hindenburg Research had in its Jan. 24 report alleged stock manipulation and improper use of tax havens by Adani, and flagged "substantial" debt levels, which the group has denied.

9 killed, 10 injured in SW Pakistan's suicide attack

ISLAMABAD, March 6 (Xinhua) -- Nine security personnel were killed and 10 others injured when a suicide bomber hit their vehicle in Pakistan's southwest Balochistan province on Monday, officials said.

The incident happened in Bolan district where the bomber rammed his explosive-laden motorbike into the truck of paramilitary troops Balochistan Constabulary at the border area with Sibi district, District Police Officer of Sibi Yousuf Karim Bhanghar confirmed in talks with Xinhua.

Fire at Rohingya camp in Bangladesh leaves refugees homeless

COX’S BAZAR, Bangladesh (AP) — A massive fire at a crammed camp for Rohingya Muslims in southern Bangladesh left thousands of the refugees homeless Sunday, a fire official and the United Nations said.

No casualties were reported at Balukhali camp in Cox’s Bazar district, said Emdadul Haque, a fire service official.

The UNHCR in Bangladesh said in a tweet that Rohingya refugee volunteers responded to the fire with the agency and its partners providing support. It provided no further details.

Pakistan bans media broadcasts of ex-PM Imran Khan speeches

ISLAMABAD (AP) — Pakistan’s media regulator banned broadcasts of former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s speeches as police arrived at one of his homes to deliver another court summons for the ousted premier, officials said Monday.

The development is the latest in a political tug of war between the former cricket star turned Islamist politician and the government of his successor, Shahbaz Sharif, as Khan campaigns for early elections.

7 killed, 23 injured in road accidents in Pakistan in 24 hours

ISLAMABAD, March 5 (Xinhua) -- At least seven people were killed and 23 others injured in two separate road accidents in Pakistan in the last 24 hours, the rescue service reported.

At least four people were killed on Saturday evening when a truck collided with a container truck in Zhob district of Pakistan's southwest Balochistan province, the rescue service told media.

Athlete dead in shipwreck left Pakistan to help disabled son

QUETTA, Pakistan (AP) — A Pakistani national soccer team player who died in a migrant shipwreck off of Italy’s southern coast embarked on the voyage to find medical treatment for her disabled 3-year-old son, her sister and a friend said Saturday. Hospitals had told her that help overseas could be her only option.
