UNHCR warns of dire consequences for refugees from COVID-19 underfunding

ISLAMABAD, Sep 17 (APP): United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (NHCR), the UN Refugee Agency, called for more global attention and funding support, to counter the impact of COVID-19 on forcibly displaced people worldwide.

The COVID-19 emergency tops the list of UNHCR’s top-10 underfunded situations in 2021, said a press release.

Taliban replaces women's ministry with ministry of virtue and vice

Sept 17 (Reuters) - Workers in the Afghan capital Kabul replaced signs for the country's women's ministry with those for the Taliban's moral police on Friday, as female former employees of the department said they had been locked out of the building.

A sign for the building was covered by a replacement in a mixture of Dari and Arabic, reading "Ministries of Prayer and Guidance and the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice" on Friday, according to photographs and Reuters witnesses.

India: Facility of air service extending for passengers from Kanpur

Kanpur: It is a big accomplishment of the city that it has now been connected with direct air service to Hyderabad, Bangalore, Mumbai, and Delhi respectively.

Cities like Lucknow, Varanasi, Prayagraj, Gorakhpur, and Bareilly, remains available from Kanpur as well. The service has repeatedly begun on September 15, this year.

Passengers say they are happy with the new arrangement of the air service. If the facilities are increasing day by day it should be welcomed with a good gesture.

India: Congress forms screening committee for UP assembly polls

New Delhi, Sep 17 (PTI) Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Friday constituted the party's screening committee for the Uttar Pradesh assembly elections with Jitendra Singh as its chairman.

Rajya Sabha MP Deepender Singh Hooda and Maharashtra MLA Varsha Gaikwad have been appointed as members of the panel, which also has the party general secretary in-charge for Uttar Pradesh as its member.

India: Waterlogged areas worsen situation in Kanpur

Kanpur: Since the past three days the city residents are witnessing heavy rains. There were some districts where more than 100 mm of rain has been recorded.

The torrential rains have waterlogged the roads in such a way that the roads are closed and people are finding it difficult to even get out of their homes.

Some are seen levelling the trenches. The car owners are not minding if the road users are getting dirtier by the dregs of the stagnant logged water splashing on their clothing. In such a grim and awkwardly situation, problems are going to increase.

India: Two metro stations near Tikri border closed due to 'security' reasons

New Delhi, Sep 17 (PTI) Two Delhi Metro stations near Tikri border with Haryana, one of the sites of the ongoing farmers' protests, were on Friday closed owing to security reasons, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation said.

The two stations in Haryana -- Pandit Shree Ram Sharma and Bahadurgarh City -- fall on the Green Line of the network.

The DMRC tweeted to alert commuters: "Security Update Entry/exit for Pandit Shree Ram Sharma and Bahadurgarh City have been closed".

India: Four held with five gold biscuits & jewellery at Central Station

Kanpur: Four youths from Rajasthan have been held with 3.5 Kg gold-containing five gold biscuits and jewellery at the Central station here at 8 a.m.

The GRP suspecting upon them searched their bags when they came down  Brahmputra Express.

According to the news report, Deepak alias Deepu of Dholpur, Ramesh Saini and Manoj Saini of Jhunjhunu, and Surendra Kumar Sain of Bada Gaon in Jhunjhunu were caught.

India: Woman abducted, raped by three men in C'garh

Korba, Sep 16 (PTI) A 28-year-old woman was allegedly abducted and raped over two days by three men in Chhattisgarh's Korba district, police said on Thursday.

Vijay Kanwar (30), Hiralal (26) and Ramlal Kanwar alias Balla (30) were arrested on Wednesday evening after the woman was rescued, they said. The trio allegedly abducted her on the afternoon of September 13 when she had gone to fetch water from a tap in the village located under Dipka police station limits, said Avinash Singh, local Station House Officer (SHO).

India: New cases of dengue bring tally to 108 in Kanpur

Kanpur: Five new cases of dengue were reported on Wednesday thereby making the tally to 108 active cases across the district.

As per a report released by Kanpur Chief Medical Officer (CMO), the district reported five new dengue cases on Wednesday.

Out of the total 108 cases, 84 cases have been reported in the rural areas of the district.

The report further stated that 224 and 1125 tests were conducted for dengue and malaria and respectively across the district.

Two patients tested positive for malaria.No deaths were reported due to dengue in the district.
