India: UP polls: SP, AAP seek removal of govt officials

Lucknow, Jan 9 (PTI) The Samajwadi Party on Sunday urged the Election Commission to remove some top UP government officials, alleging that they are functioning like "workers" of the ruling BJP.

Separately, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) too sought the removal of some officials, who according to it are working as "agents of the BJP".

India: UP govt order closure of schools

Lucknow, Jan 9 (PTI) Amid a fresh spurt of Covid cases in Uttar Pradesh, the state government on Sunday ordered closure of all schools till January 16 and said the night curfew will continue to be in force between 10 pm and 6 am in the state.

The government, in a statement said, the night curfew, which happened to be in force between 11 pm and 6 am since December 25 had been extended by two hours on Tuesday.

India: Woman raped by four men in UP's Budaun village

Budaun (UP), Jan 10 (PTI) A woman was allegedly abducted by four people and raped in a village in Budaun district of Uttar Pradesh, police said on Monday.

The incident took place last Saturday when the woman had gone out to purchase medicines from a nearby medicine shop, they said.

Assistant Superintendent of Police Praveen Singh Chauhan said the police have registered an FIR on the woman's complaint and are trying to nab the offenders.

India: Man arrested for raping minor girl in UP's Shikohabad

Firozabad (UP), Jan 10 (PTI) A man has been arrested for allegedly raping a 12-year-old girl in Shikohabad area of Uttar Pradesh's Firozabad district, police said on Monday.

The accused was the driver of a car of a transgender who came here to attend "Kinnar Sammelan" being organised from January 1 to 14, Additional Superintendent of Police (Rural) Akhilesh Narain said.

The incident took place on January 8, he said, adding that the accused driver has been arrested and sent to jail.

India: Trial court reserves order on Kerala nun rape case

Kottayam (Ker), Jan 10 (PTI) A court here on Monday concluded hearing and reserved its verdict in the case of alleged rape of a nun by Bishop Franco Mulakkal.

The Additional Sessions Court is likely to pronounce the judgment on January 14. Trial in the case had started in November 2019.

The rape case against the Bishop was registered by police in Kottayam district in 2018.

India: Elections right time to defeat hatred: Rahul Gandhi

New Delhi, Jan 10 (PTI) Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Monday said the upcoming assembly elections are a right time to defeat hatred.

Assembly elections in five states including in Uttar Pradesh will be held in seven phases starting February 10 to March 7. The counting shall take place on March 10, the Election Commission has announced.

"This is the right opportunity to defeat hatred.#Elections2022, " Gandhi said in a tweet in Hindi.

India: Michael Lobo resigns as Goa minister, quits BJP

Panaji, Jan 10 (PTI) Goa minister and BJP MLA Michael Lobo on Monday resigned from the Pramod Sawant-led cabinet and also as member of the Legislative Assembly, ahead of the state polls scheduled next month.

The Goa BJP unit later said Lobo's move will not have any impact on the party's prospects in the state Assembly elections, to be held on February 14.

India: Defence minister tests positive for COVID-19

New Delhi, Jan 10 (PTI) Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Monday said he has tested positive for COVID-19.

In a tweet, he said he has "mild symptoms" and is under home quarantine.

"I have tested positive for Corona today with mild symptoms. I am under home quarantine. I request everyone who have recently come in my contact to isolate themselves and get tested," Singh said.

India: COVID-19, 179,723 new cases in a day

New Delhi, Jan 10 (PTI) India saw a single-day rise of 179,723 coronavirus infections taking the total tally to 35,707,727, including 4,033 cases of the Omicron variant reported across 27 states and union territories so far, according to data updated by the Union Health Ministry on Monday

The number of active cases has increased to 723,619, the highest in around 204 days, while the death toll has climbed to 483,936 with 146 fatalities, the data updated at 8 am stated

Of the total 4,033 cases of Omicron variant,?1,552?have recovered or migrated

China, Maldives on shared path to hope, prosperity, happiness: Wang Yi
