India: Kerala bishop acquitted in nun rape case

New Delhi, Jan 14 (PTI) With a court in Kerala on Friday acquitting a bishop in the rape case of a nun, NCW chairperson Rekha Sharma has said the woman should approach the high court against the judgement.

An additional district and sessions court acquitted Roman Catholic Bishop Franco Mulakkal of the charges of raping the nun in a convent in the southern state.

India: Govindnagar MLA approaches man at bath during his campaign

Kanpur: The leaders, activists and party workers have been making door to door campaigning given the declaration of the assembly elections' date.

A viral video of Govindnagar MLA Surendra Maithani has been going viral here.

He approached his supporter's space where he was bathing. He was shaping himself when the politician reached near him.

The politician asked several questions as the person in the picture was seen bathing.

Though the video is of short duration it has attracted attention on a large level.

China steps up construction along disputed Bhutan border, satellite images show

NEW DELHI, Jan 12(Reuters) - China has accelerated settlement-building along its disputed border with Bhutan, with more than 200 structures, including two-storey buildings, under construction in six locations, according to satellite image analysis conducted for Reuters.

The images and analysis supplied to Reuters by U.S. data analytics firm HawkEye 360, which uses satellites to gather intelligence on ground-level activities, and vetted by two other experts, provide a detailed look into China's recent construction along its frontier with Bhutan.

India: Arrest warrant issued against ex-BJP Minister in UP

Sultanpur (UP), Jan 12 (PTI) A local court on Wednesday here issued an arrest warrant against BJP MLA Swami Prasad Maurya, who recently resigned as cabinet minister, in a seven year old case.

The case was lodged against Maurya in 2014 for allegedly making objectionable comments against Hindu gods.

The MP-MLA court Judge Yogesh Kumar Yadav issued the warrant against him after he did not attend the court hearing on Wednesday.

Delhi HC admits M J Akbar's appeal against acquittal of Priya Ramani in defamation case

New Delhi, Jan 13 (PTI) The Delhi High Court Thursday agreed to examine former Union Minister M J Akbar's appeal against the trial court order acquitting journalist Priya Ramani in his criminal defamation case over her allegations of sexual harassment.

Admit. List in due course, said Justice Mukta Gupta who had issued notice to Ramani on the appeal in August last year.

Sri Lanka: Former prison commissioner sentenced to death over prisoners' killings

Colombo, Jan 13 (PTI) A top Sri Lankan court here has sentenced to death a former prisons commissioner over the Welikada Prison riot in 2012 which killed at least 27 inmates.

The Colombo High Court trial on Wednesday found the former superintendent Emil Ranjan Lamahewa guilty and passed the death sentence.

The first defendant in the case, the then Inspector of the Police Narcotics Bureau, Neomal Rangajeewa was acquitted from all charges.

India: Cong releases first list of candidates for Uttar Pradesh polls

New Delhi, Jan 13 (PTI) Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Thursday released the party's first list of 125 candidates, including 50 women, for the upcoming assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh.

The party has also fielded Unnao rape victim's mother Asha Singh from the Unnao Assembly constituency.

Addressing a press conference, she said 40 per cent of the Congress candidates are women and another 40 percent are youth and by doing so the party is making a new and historic beginning.

India: Eminent rocket scientist S Somanath appointed ISRO chief

New Delhi, Jan 12 (PTI) Eminent rocket scientist S Somanath has been appointed as the chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) as well as the Space Secretary, a Personnel Ministry order issued on Wednesday said.

Somanath, who is at present Director of Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC), will succeed K Sivan who completes his extended tenure on Friday.
