India: Petrol, diesel prices hiked by 80 paise a litre, 3rd increase in 4 days

New Delhi, Mar 25 (PTI) Petrol and diesel prices were hiked by 80 paise a litre each on Friday, the third increase in four days as oil firms recoup losses from holding rates during the period prior to the recently-concluded assembly elections.

Petrol in Delhi will now cost Rs 97.81 per litre as against Rs 97.01 previously while diesel rates have gone up from Rs 88.27 per litre to Rs 89.07, according to a price notification of state fuel retailers.

India: Man tied to tree, wife gang raped in UP's Muzaffarnagar

Muzaffarnagar (UP), Mar 25 (PTI) A group of people allegedly tied a man to a tree and raped his wife in this district, police said on Friday.

The incident took place on Wednesday night when the couple was returning to their village, they said.

According to the complaint lodged by the survivor's family, the man was walking back home from his in-laws' house with his wife when 10 people intercepted them.

Indian EAM holds talks with Chinese FM Wang

New Delhi, Mar 25 (PTI) External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Friday held wide-ranging talks with his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi.

Ahead of the talks, Jaishankar tweeted, "Greeted Chinese FM Wang Yi at Hyderabad House. Our discussions commence shortly."

It was the first public comment by India on Wang's visit.

The Chinese foreign minister arrived in Delhi on Thursday evening in the highest-level visit between the two countries after the ties came under severe strain following the military standoff in eastern Ladakh that began nearly two years ago.

India: Young worker dies aftershock from high tension wire in Kanpur

Kanpur: In a shocking incident, a young man died due to shock from a high tension line while unloading sand from a dumper.

The deceased, identified as Rohit Shukla, came in contact with a high tension wire while working and suffered a painful death.

Bithoor police reached the spot and took the dead body into it's possession. Later the police sent it for post-mortem.

Brother of the deceased, Vijay Shukla told that we the three brothers used to work as labourers in Kanpur and our job was to unload the sand from the dumper.

India: BJP using goons to attack democracy: Akhilesh Yadav

Lucknow, Mar 23 (PTI) Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav on Wednesday accused the ruling BJP of misusing power and alleged that it is using its "goons" to attack democracy.

"The BJP has done no work for the welfare of the common man. The entire country is watching the hooliganism the BJP is doing to get majority," Yadav said referring to the election to the upper house of the state legislature.

India exports cross USD 400 bn milestone in FY22, Imports USD 589 billion

New Delhi, Mar 23 (PTI) The country's exports for the first time crossed the USD 400 billion mark in a fiscal on healthy performance by sectors such as petroleum products, engineering, gems and jewellery, and chemicals, according to the commerce ministry's data released on Wednesday.

The merchandise exports rose by by 37 per cent to USD 400.8 billion in 2021-22 until March 21 against USD 292 billion in 2020-21. Previously, the outbound shipments had touched a record of USD 330.07 billion in 2018-19.

India: UP govt formation; Adityanath meets BJP chief Nadda

New Delhi, Mar 23 (PTI) Uttar Pradesh chief minister-designate Yogi Adityanath on Wednesday met BJP president J P Nadda to discuss the formation of government in the state.

The BJP, which stormed back to power in the crucial state, is scheduled to elect its legislative party leader on Thursday.

Senior BJP leader and Union Home Minister Amit Shah has been appointed as the party's observer for government formation in the state.

India: Akhilesh attacks BJP on stray cattle menace in UP

Lucknow, Mar 24 (PTI) Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav on Thursday attacked the BJP on the stray cattle issue in Uttar Pradesh, tweeting a news clipping that claimed two people died this month in the state after being attacked by bulls.

During campaigning for the state assembly elections, Yadav frequently had raised the problem of stray animals.
