India: JD(U) flays Bihar BJP chief over population growth rate figures

Patna, Sep 10 (PTI) The JD(U) lashed out at Bihar BJP chief Sanjay Jaiswal for coming up with "misleading" data on population growth rate in two districts of the state, alleging that he was trying to incite communal hatred among people.

Jaiswal had on Wednesday claimed that population growth rate in Kishanganj and Araria districts was the "highest in the world", partly due to the alleged high rate of influx of "Bangladeshi infiltrators".

India: Man booked for raping Class 2 student in UP's Ballia

Ballia (UP), Sep 10 (PTI) A 25-year-old man was booked for allegedly raping a seven-year-old girl in the Nagra area here, police said on Saturday.

The accused lured the girl when she was playing outside, took her to his house on a motorcycle and raped her, they said, adding the incident took place on September 5.

India: Head constable beaten up in Lichchavi Express, one held

Kanpur: There was disarray in the pantry car of the Lichchavi Express coming from New Delhi to Kanpur when the vendors thrashed the head constable.

At the Central railway station, the GRP apprehended a vendor from Bihar and started an investigation.

Head constable Ikhlaq Khan, posted in Ghaziabad, was coming here from New Delhi on Saturday by Lichchavi Express with his daughter.

He told the GRP in Kanpur Central that the vendors and workers in the pantry car of the train were beating up a young man badly.

US extends further $20 mln humanitarian assistance for Pakistan’s flood victims

ISLAMABAD, Sep 9 (APP): US Agency for International Development (USAID) Administrator Samantha Power on Friday announced that the United States, through the USAID, extended an additional US$20 million in humanitarian assistance to support the people affected by severe flooding in Pakistan.

Pakistan was ravaged by heavy monsoon rains, as well as landslides and glacial lake outburst floods that have been ongoing since June, the USAID Administrator said.

India Imposes Export Duty On Rice

NEW DELHI, Sept 9 (NNN-PTI) – India yesterday imposed a 20 percent export duty on several varieties of rice, though excluding a few, said media reports, quoting a statement issued by the Department of Revenue, under the Indian Finance Ministry.

The newly imposed export duty will come into effect from today – Sept 9.

The move is seen as an attempt by the Indian government, to ensure sufficient rice stocks for domestic consumption, particularly through the public distribution system, under various schemes it has initiated, said the media reports.

Nine Killed In Lightning Strike In Bangladesh

DHAKA, Sept 9 (NNN-BSS) – At least nine people were killed yesterday, by a massive lightning strike in Bangladesh’s Sirajganj district, 134 km north-west of the national capital, Dhaka, a local police official said.

Md Noor Alam Siddiqui, additional police chief of the Sirajganj district, said, “Nine people, including five of the same family, were killed in lightning strike in Sirajganj’s Ullapara sub-district.”

Two others were injured in the incident, he added.

UN chief calls for massive int'l support for Pakistan to handle climate catastrophe

ISLAMABAD, Sept. 9 (Xinhua) -- United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres here on Friday appealed to the international community for massive support for Pakistan to respond to the ongoing climate catastrophe devastating the lives of millions.

"Pakistan needs massive international support. It is not just a message of solidarity but an international obligation and responsibility. Pakistan is at the front line of the impact of climate change," the secretary-general said.

Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said Friday that the world owes impoverished Pakistan “massive” help in recovering from the summer’s devastating floods because the country bears less blame than many other nations for climate change, which experts say contributed to the deluge.
