Sri Lankan parliament passes interim budget

COLOMBO, Sept. 2 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lanka's parliament on Friday passed an interim budget with 120 votes for, five votes against and 43 abstentions.

The members of parliament (MPs) who abstained from voting included those from the main opposition party Samagi Jana Balawegaya, and a group of MPs who have broken away from the ruling party Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP).

The interim budget was presented to Parliament on August 30 by President Ranil Wickremesinghe.

Lufthansa flight cancellations trigger protests at Indian capital airport

NEW DELHI, Sept. 2 (Xinhua) -- Hundreds of stranded passengers and their relatives early Friday staged protests at Indira Gandhi International Airport in India's capital city New Delhi after being informed that their Lufthansa flights to Frankfurt and Munich have been cancelled due to a pilot strike.

The German flag carrier's flight cancellations triggered protests from passengers waiting inside the airport and their relatives outside it, who were demanding a refund or alternate arrangements.

Kochi, Sep 1 (PTI) Matrimonial relationships in Kerala appear to have been influenced by consumer culture of 'use and throw' which is evident from rise in live-in relationships and the prevailing trend to opt for divorce on flimsy or selfish grounds, the High Court here observed recently.

The High Court further observed that the younger generation apparently views marriage as an evil to be avoided for enjoying a free life without any liabilities or obligations.

India: Twitter defiant to laws of the land: Centre tells K'taka HC

Bengaluru, Sep 2 (PTI) The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) in its 101-page statement of objections before the Karnataka High Court has termed the microblogging platform Twitter of being defiant to the laws of the land.

The case is slated to be heard on September 8. MeitY filed its statement of objections to the court on Thursday.

Moody's slashes India's economic growth forecast to 7.7% for 2022

New Delhi, Sep 1 (PTI) Moody's Investors Service on Thursday slashed India's economic growth projection for 2022 to 7.7 per cent, citing dampening of economic momentum in coming quarters on rising interest rates, uneven monsoon, and slowing global growth.

This is a sharp 1.1 percentage points cut from the growth projection of 8.8 per cent for current year made in May by Moody's.

The Indian economy grew 8.3 per cent in 2021 after a 6.7 per cent contraction in 2020, the year when the pandemic struck the country.

India: 20-year-old raped in UP's Ghaziabad factory, three held

Ghaziabad, Sep 1 (PTI) Three men were arrested in connection with the alleged rape of a 20-year-old girl at a factory under the Link Road police station limits of the district, police said on Thursday.

The incident took place on August 28, but came to the fore on Wednesday evening when the victim narrated her ordeal to her mother who reached the police station and lodged an FIR against the three youths.

India launches its indigenously designed and built aircraft carrier

Kochi, Sep 2 (PTI) India launched its maiden indigenously designed and built aircraft carrier INS Vikrant on Friday, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi commissioning the warship that put India into a select league of countries with domestic capability to develop such large vessels.

Modi, who also unveiled a new Naval Ensign inspired by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj said the country has taken off a "burden of slavery."

India: Mentally challenged youth scales up on railways OHE pole

Kanpur: A youth was seen climbing up the OHE Line near Barrrajpur railway station in Kanpur's town Shivrajpur on Anwarganj- Kasganj rail route on Friday morning.

After passing the train some distance away from the level crossing gate, people started making noise when they saw the young man climbing on the OHE pole.

People informed the police of the apprehension of an accident due to the 25 thousand kV current running in the OHE line.

When the police reached the spot, brought the young man down after persuading him to get down.
