Emirati FM meets Syria's Assad in Damascus in further sign of thawing ties

04 Jan 2023; MEMO: Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad received the United Arab Emirates Foreign Minister in Damascus on Wednesday in the latest sign of thawing relations between Assad and an Arab State that once supported rebels trying to overthrow him, Reuters reports.

PM to co-chair ‘Climate Resilient Pakistan’ conference in Geneva on Jan 9

ISLAMABAD, Jan 4 (APP): Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif will co-host, along with United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, an international conference on ‘Climate Resilient Pakistan’ in Geneva on January 9.   

At the conference, the prime minister will outline Pakistan’s vision for rehabilitating the affected population and reconstructing the damaged infrastructure in a resilient manner, with the support of development partners, and the country’s transition towards a more dynamic and sustainable economic development model.

Pakistan: NA Speaker pledges continued support to Kashmiri cause

ISLAMABAD, Jan 04 (APP): National Assembly Speaker Raja Pervaiz Ashraf and Acting Speaker Zahid Akram Durrani said on Wednesday that Pakistan would continue extending its moral, diplomatic and political support to the people of Kashmir in their struggle for inalienable right to self-determination.

In their message on Self Determination Day being observed on Jan 5, the Speaker said the day reminds the international community of its commitments regarding Kashmir.

Sri Lanka to use Sinopharm vaccine as COVID-19 booster dose

COLOMBO, Jan. 4 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lanka's health authorities said on Wednesday that those who were yet to receive a booster dose of the COVID-19 vaccine should receive China's Sinopharm vaccines as coronavirus infections were likely to rise in the island country this year.

Chief Epidemiologist of the Health Ministry's Epidemiology Unit Samitha Ginige told reporters that 6 million people out of those above the age of 18 in Sri Lanka have not received their booster dose as yet.

"We have 1.8 million Sinopharm vaccines in stock," Ginige said.

India: Woman dragged under car for 12 km in Delhi

New Delhi, Jan 2 (PTI) The 20-year-old woman, killed in the early hours of New Year after her scooter was hit by a car, was dragged for 12 kilometres under the vehicle on the city's roads, police said and added culpable homicide among other stringent sections on Monday in the case following protests over alleged "shoddy investigation".

Police said that the victim's body was found naked on roadside in Kanjhawala area in outer Delhi and a medical board conducted a post-mortem on Monday, which will establish if she was sexually assaulted by the accused.

Phuket-bound IndiGo plane returns to Delhi due to hydraulic system failure

New Delhi, Jan 3 (PTI) An IndiGo plane enroute to Phuket suffered a hydraulic system problem and returned to Delhi airport on Tuesday morning, according to officials.

The A320 neo plane, which left for Phuket in Thailand at around 6.25 am, returned to the airport here at about 7.20 am due to hydraulic failure, airport sources said. The sources said the aircraft landed safely at Delhi airport.

Sri Lankan stocks gain on first trading day of 2023

COLOMBO, Jan. 2 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lankan stocks gained on the first trading day of 2023, with a total turnover of 1.87 billion rupees (5.15 million U.S. dollars) at the end of trading on Monday.

The All-Share Price Index (ASPI), which measures the movements of the overall market, gained 0.23 percent, while the Standard & Poor's Sri Lanka 20 (S&P SL20), which follows the performance of 20 leading publicly traded companies listed in the Colombo Stock Exchange, gained 0.19 percent.

Police: 2 kids among 6 people die in Kashmir village attack: India

SRINAGAR, India (AP) — Two children were killed and five other civilians wounded in a blast in a village in Indian-controlled Kashmir on Monday, a day after assailants sprayed bullets toward a row of homes, leaving at least four dead, police said.

The blast occurred near one of the houses targeted overnight in Dhangri village in southern Rajouri district. A 5-year-old boy and a 12-year-old girl died in the blast. The injured were being treated at a hospital.

Indian Minister voices ‘very deep’ concern over Ukraine conflict; urges Russia, Ukraine to return to dialogue and diplomacy

Vienna, Jan 2 (PTI) Voicing "very deep" concern over the raging Ukraine conflict, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has said that India is on the side of peace and since the beginning of the hostilities New Delhi's effort has been to bring Moscow and Kyiv to return to dialogue and diplomacy as differences cannot be settled through violence.

Jaishankar, who arrived here from Cyprus on the second leg of his two-nation tour, made the remarks on Sunday evening while addressing the members of the Indian diaspora in Austria.

China's approach to India same as Russia's to Ukraine: Rahul Gandhi

New Delhi, Jan 2 (PTI) Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Monday said China is adopting the same principle with India as Russia is with Ukraine, as it is threatening to alter India's boundaries.

He also claimed that the Sino-Indian border conflict has a link with a weak economy, a confused nation without any vision, hatred, anger and the Chinese sitting in Indian territory.
