Iran employs drones in massive war games amid tensions with West

01 Jan 2023; MEMO: Iran's armed forces downed hostile simulated drones on Sunday during large-scale military drills underway from the eastern part of the Strait of Hormuz to the northern part of the Indian Ocean, Anadolu reports.

During the drills, condemned Zolfaghar 1401, Iran's indigenously-developed Mersad air defense system was used to detect, intercept and target mock drones early on Sunday, the state media said.

Bangladesh installs cameras for tiger, deer, pig census in forests

DHAKA, Jan. 1 (Xinhua) -- The Forest Department of Bangladesh has started setting up a total of 1,330 cameras at 665 spots in the Sundarbans, world's largest mangrove forests, to count tigers, deer and pigs.

Abu Naser, forest official of Sundarbans west zone and director of Sundarbans Tiger Conservation Project, told Bangladesh private news agency UNB that the camera installation work started at Kalabogi Ecotourism Center on Sunday morning, adding that apart from counting tigers, this year, the forest department will count deer and pigs as well under the project.

Bangladesh's largest annual trade fair kicks off

DHAKA, Jan. 1 (Xinhua) -- The 27th edition of the Dhaka International Trade Fair (DITF), the largest annual commercial and trade event in Bangladesh, kicked off Sunday at the mega Chinese-built venue the Bangabandhu Bangladesh-China Friendship Exhibition Center (BBCFEC).

The trade fair, which is being held at the BBCFEC located in Purbachal on the outskirts of the capital Dhaka, will last for a month.

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — A bomb exploded near a checkpoint at Kabul’s military airport Sunday morning killing and wounding “several” people, a Taliban official said, the first deadly blast of 2023 in Afghanistan.

No one immediately claimed responsibility for the attack, but the regional affiliate of the Islamic State group — known as the Islamic State in Khorasan Province — has increased its attacks since the Taliban takeover in 2021. Targets have included Taliban patrols and members of Afghanistan’s Shiite minority.

Those that have survived are tapping local sources and going online.

In India, from hole-in-the-wall casual eateries to fine dining, restaurants were devastated by lockdowns and virus outbreaks, with millions losing their jobs since COVID-19 hit in early 2020.

Adani takes control of NDTV, buys promoters' stake at 17 pc premium to open offer price, Roys resign

New Delhi, Dec 30 (PTI) Adani group on Friday gained full control of news broadcaster NDTV after it acquired most of the stake of founders, Prannoy Roy and Radhika Roy, at a premium of almost 17 per cent over the rate it paid to minority shareholders of the firm.

The Adani Group now holds 64.71 per cent of New Delhi Television Ltd (NDTV), according to a regulatory filing.

Pakistani, Chinese staff join hands to make CPEC success story: minister

ISLAMABAD, Dec. 30 (Xinhua) -- Pakistani Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives Ahsan Iqbal said on Friday that Pakistani and Chinese staff of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) project have joined hands to work hard with dedication as a team to make the project a success story.

Launched in 2013, CPEC is a corridor linking Pakistan's Gwadar Port with Kashgar in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, which highlights energy, transport and industrial cooperation.

Security Forces Seized Eight Anti-Aircraft Guns In East Afghanistan

KABUL, Dec 29 (NNN-ANA) – The Afghan forces, during searching operations, discovered eight anti-aircraft guns, from the eastern Parwan province, said a statement of the Defence Ministry, released today.

The heavy weapons were found from the Jangal Bagh area, on the outskirts of provincial capital, Charikar city, 55 km north of Kabul, a couple of days ago, the statement said, without providing more details.

Sri Lanka’s Int’l Airport In Mattala Resumed Operation

COLOMBO, Dec 29 (NNN-XINHUA) – Sri Lanka’s second international airport, in the southern town of Mattala, resumed international flight operation today, after a lapse of two years.

A passenger plane from Russia’s Red Wings Airlines, landed at the Mattala international airport with around 400 passengers.

The Red Wings Airlines is to operate two flights a week to the Mattala international airport, which has mostly been used over the last two years for refueling and for planes diverted in emergency situations.
