India: Heavy security cover at Delhi borders following farmers tractor parade

New Delhi, Jan 28 (PTI) Delhi border points remained under heavy police deployment on Thursday in the aftermath of the violence that broke out during farmers' tractor parade in the national capital on Republic Day, officials said.

Security personnel have also been deployed at the Red Fort, they said.

India: AAP will contest elections in six states: Kejriwal

New Delhi, Jan 28 (PTI) Delhi Chief Minister and AAP national convenor Arvind Kejriwal on Thursday said the party will contest elections in six states -- Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Goa, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and Gujarat.

He made the announcement at the ninth National Council meeting of the Aam Aadmi Party.

"Other parties have no vision and that is why they are talking about the past. AAP is the only party talking about the future and has the vision of 21st and 22nd century," Kejriwal said.

India: Take anti-agriculture laws back immediately: Rahul

New Delhi, Jan 27 (PTI) A day after violence during the farmers' tractor rally in the national capital, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi appealed to the Narendra Modi government on Wednesday to repeal, what he claimed were, "anti-agriculture" laws.

Taking to Twitter, he also shared a quote by Mahatma Gandhi -- "In a gentle way, you can shake the world."

Tiktok to shut down India business

New Delhi, Jan 27 (PTI) Chinese social media firm Bytedance, which owns Tiktok and Helo apps, has announced the closure of its India business following continued restrictions on its services in the country.

Tiktok's global interim head Vanessa Pappas and vice president for global business solutions Blake Chandlee in a joint email to employees have communicated the decision of the company that it is reducing team size and the decision will impact all employees in India.

Delhi Police advises Connaught Place to remain shut in view of farmers' tractor parade

New Delhi, Jan 26 (PTI) The Connaught Place in the heart of the national capital will remain closed Tuesday in view of the ongoing tractor parade by farmers which turned violent at some places in the city, the New Delhi Traders Association said.

Atul Bhargava, the President of the Association, said the Delhi Police has advised the commercial hub to remain closed in view of the agitation.

India: Protesting farmers enter Red Fort

New Delhi, Jan 26 (PTI) Deviating from the designated route for the proposed tractor parade, a section of protesting farmers entered the Red Fort on Tuesday and hoisted flags from some domes of the iconic monument in the national capital.

Pushed back by the police form the ITO in Central Delhi a section of the protesting farmers drove their tractors to Red Fort complex.

India: Hearing in case by shooter Vatrika Singh against Smriti Irani on Feb 2

Sultanpur, Jan 25 (PTI) Hearing in a case filed by shooter Vartika Singh against Union minister Smriti Irani and two others that was to be heard on Monday will now be held on February 2.

The hearing in the MP-MLA Court was scheduled for January 25 but it was postponed to February 2 as judge PK Jayant was on leave on Monday, Vartika Singh's counsel Rohit Tripathi said.

Vartika, an international shooter, has moved a court here accusing the Union minister and two others of demanding money to make her a member of the central women's commission.

India: NCW to challenge Bombay HC judgment on sexual assault

New Delhi, Jan 25 (PTI) The National Commission for Women on Monday said it will challenge in the Supreme Court the Bombay High Court judgment which said groping without "skin to skin" contact is not sexual assault as defined under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

This judgment will not only have a cascading effect on various provisions involving safety and security of women in general but also subject all women to ridicule, National Commission for Women (NCW) Chairperson Rekha Sharma said.

Indian Govt plans to impose green tax on old polluting vehicles

New Delhi, Jan 25 (PTI) The government plans to impose green tax on old polluting vehicles soon in a bid protect environment and curb pollution.

Vehicles like strong hybrids, electric vehicles and those running on alternate fuels like CNG, ethanol and LPG will be exempted while the revenue collected through the green tax will be utilised for tackling pollution, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways said on Monday.

India: Police lathicharge protesting farmers at Chintamani Chowk

New Delhi, Jan 26 (PTI) Police lathicharged farmers at Chintamani Chowk in Shadara as some tractors taking part in the rally tried to deviate from the scheduled route and enter Delhi, on Tuesday.

The rally was scheduled to head towards Apsara Border but some of the tractors pushed through a police barricade at Chintamani Chowk. This prompted lathicharge by the police who tried to push back the farmers.

In the chaos, windshields of some vehicles were shattered.
