Indian Farmers' Tractor parade: Clashes between farmers, police in parts of Delhi

New Delhi, Jan 26 (PTI) Protesting farmers clashed with police at several places in the national capital and entered the iconic Red Fort and ITO in the heart of national capital, with hundreds of them deviating from pre-decided routes, prompting security personnel to resort to lathicharge and tear gas.

Chaotic scenes were witnessed at ITO, where hundreds of protesters could be seen chasing police personnel with sticks and ramming their tractors into the buses parked by police.

India: Repeal farm laws immediately: Left parties

New Delhi, Jan 24(PTI) Left parties on Sunday reiterated their support for the farmer groups protesting against the Centre's new agri laws and demanded that the government immediately repeal the legislations.

In a joint statement, the CPI(M), CPI(ML), CPI, Revolutionary Socialist Party and the All India Forward Bloc also said that they hail the unity and determination displayed by farmers.

India: EC to soon begin mock trials for remote voting

New Delhi, Jan 25 (PTI) Mock trials for remote voting facility for electors would begin soon, Chief Election Commissioner Sunil Arora has said.

In his message to mark the 11th National Voters' Day, he said a research project on remote voting using cutting-edge technology has already begun.

"There has been a good progress in this regard and mock trials would begin soon," Arora said on Sunday, adding the poll panel's proposal to extend postal ballot facility for overseas Indian voters was under active consideration of the Law Ministry.

India: NGT directs UP govt to take action against unregulated solid waste dumping in Yamuna

New Delhi, Jan 23 (PTI) The National Green Tribunal has directed the authorities in Uttar Pradesh to take action against unregulated dumping of solid waste in the Yamuna flood plains, noting that steps taken for handling the waste are not adequate.

A bench headed by NGT Chairperson Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel said despite monitoring for over five years and also taking coercive measures, no progress is visible.

India: Ramani's allegations of sexual misconduct false, Akbar reiterates before Delhi court

New Delhi, Jan 23 (PTI) Former union minister M J Akbar on Saturday reiterated before a Delhi court that the allegations of sexual misconduct made by journalist Priya Ramani against him were "fabricated and false".

Akbar made the submission before Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Ravindra Kumar through senior advocate Geeta Luthra during the final hearing in a criminal complaint filed by him against Ramani for allegedly defaming him by accusing him of sexual misconduct decades ago.

Kolkata, Jan 23 (PTI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi interacted with several Bengali actors at a tea session after attending a programme at Victoria Memorial here on the occasion of the 125th birth anniversary of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose on Saturday.

Modi interacted with actors Rudranil Ghosh, Indrani Halder and Prosenjit Chatterjee after the light and sound show on Netaji's life, industry sources said.

Delhi riots: Court grants bail to two persons

New Delhi, Jan 20 (PTI) A Delhi court has granted bail to two persons in a case related to the communal violence in north east Delhi in February last year.

Additional Sessions Judge Amitabh Rawat granted the relief to Shanu and Zarif on furnishing a bail bond of Rs 20,000 with one surety of like amount each in the case of burning of a local person's house in Jafrabad area during the riots.

The court allowed the bail pleas considering the period of incarceration of both the accused and on the ground of parity.

India: AAP volunteers to join Jan 26 farmers' tractor parade'

Chandigarh, Jan 19 (PTI) The Punjab unit of Aam Aadmi Party on Tuesday said it would join farmers' tractor parade on January 26 in Delhi.

AAP state unit president Bhagwant Mann made the announcement while claiming that the ongoing farmers' protest has become the largest agitation in the world with the participation of such a large number of people in a peaceful manner.

Mann said his party volunteers from every village across the state would join the parade with tractors.

India: Delhi's air turns 'severe' again

New Delhi, Jan 19 (PTI) Delhi's air quality turned severe again on Tuesday due to low wind speed and high moisture levels, India Meteorological Department officials said.

The city's 24-hour average air quality index (AQI) was 404 on Tuesday. It was 372 on Monday and 347 the previous day.

Before that, Delhi's air quality remained in the severe zone for three consecutive days.

An AQI between zero and 50 is considered "good", 51 and 100 "satisfactory", 101 and 200 "moderate", 201 and 300 "poor", 301 and 400 "very poor", and 401 and 500 "severe".
