US shoots down Chinese 'spy' balloon over South Carolina

05 Feb 2023; MEMO: The US shot down a suspected Chinese spy balloon on Saturday which had been spotted above US airspace off the coast of South Carolina, Anadolu reports.

An operation is underway to recover debris from the balloon in the Atlantic Ocean.

Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said the decision was made at the direction of US President Biden.

US transfers Guantanamo Bay detainee to Belize, 34 prisoners remain

02 Feb 2023; MEMO: The US has transferred former Guantanamo Bay detainee, Majid Khan, to the small Central American nation of Belize, the Pentagon announced Thursday, Anadolu News Agency reports.

Khan pleaded guilty in a military court in 2012 to terrorism offenses related to his role as an Al-Qaeda courier, and was sentenced to more than 10 years of confinement. He was detained by the US in the wake of the September 11, 2001 attacks and imprisoned at the notorious military prison in Cuba.

US curbs exports to Iran firms for producing drones for Russia

31 Jan 2023; MEMO: The United States, on Tuesday, added seven Iranian entities to its trade blacklist for producing drones that Russia has used to attack Ukraine, according a posting by the US Department of Commerce, Reuters reports.

Nearing a year since Russia's invasion of Ukraine, allies have scrambled to gather and deploy air defences to defeat cruise missiles and Iranian-built kamikaze drones that have attacked energy infrastructure targets this winter.

US Treasury official tells 3 Middle East countries to adhere to sanctions or lose US market

28 Jan 2023; MEMO: The US Treasury Department's senior sanctions official, Brian Nelson, will be warning countries and businesses during a trip to the Middle East next week that they could lose access to the US market if they do business with entities subject to US sanctions and restrictions. This comes in addition to Washington cracking down on attempts by Russia to avoid sanctions imposed on it due to its war in Ukraine.

USA: Blinken to visit Middle East amid heightened tensions between Israel and Palestine

US to build military industrial base in Morocco

17 Jan 2023; MEMO: US President Joe Biden has instructed Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin to prepare an emergency plan to establish an American military industrial base in the Kingdom of Morocco, the New York Daily News has reported. The plan was proposed during a high-level meeting at the end of December when Biden and Austin discussed America's new global military strategy.
