India: Law student raped by lawyer, accomplice in UP's Bareilly

Bareilly (UP), Feb 20 (PTI) A law student was allegedly raped by a lawyer and his accomplice inside his chamber in Uttar Pradesh's Bareilly district last week, police said on Thursday.

The incident happened on February 15 in Bahedi area of the district, Bahedi SHO Pankaj Pant said.

Most of the states that have special provisions under Article 371 are in the Northeast. These provisions are aimed at preserving their cultural heritage and customary laws.

India: Man gets death sentence for rape-murder of minor girl

Mumbai, Feb 19 (PTI) A court in Maharashtra's Parbhani district has awarded death sentence to a man for raping and brutally killing a five year-old girl, observing the crime was "more cruel" than the act of the most dreaded animal.

Special Judge (POCSO cases) S G Inamdar in his order on Tuesday pronounced the accused, Vishnu Gore (30), guilty under Indian Penal Code Section 302 for murder and provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act.

India: Arnab Goswami owns over 82 pc of Republic TV: Company

New Delhi, Feb 19 (PTI) Renowned journalist and broadcaster Arnab Goswami owns over 82 per cent stake in Republic TV, his company said on Wednesday, clearing the air around ownership of one of the country's most-watched news channels.

In a statement, Republic Media Network said Goswami holds over 82 per cent of ARG Outlier Media Pvt Ltd -- the firm that owns and operates Republic TV.

His company also owns 99 per cent equity in the downstream digital entity that controls the digital assets of the network.

New Delhi, Feb 19 (PTI) The two interlocutors appointed by the Supreme Court on Wednesday visited Shaheen Bagh to initiate talks with the protesters, asserting that the top court has upheld their right to protest but it should not affect the rights of other citizens

The two interlocutors are advocate Sadhana Ramachandran and senior advocate Sanjay Hegde.

India: Delhi court sends Sharjeel to judicial custody till Mar 3 in New Friends Colony anti-CAA case

New Delhi, Feb 18 (PTI) A Delhi court Tuesday sent Sharjeel Imam, named as an "instigator" by Delhi Police in its charge sheet on violent protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) at New Friends Colony here last year, to judicial custody till March 3.

Imam was arrested on sedition charges last month in a separate case.

The police has filed the charge sheet before Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Gurmohina Kaur, naming Imam as an instigator of the violence.

Jaipur, Feb 18 (PTI) Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on Tuesday said the people of Delhi have taught a lesson to the BJP which the party will remember for a long time.

He claimed that the Constitution was being attacked and it was a matter of concern.

The chief minister also hit out at the vitriolic attacks made by the political opponents against each other in the recent Delhi assembly elections.

India: Mother poisons son to death, chops his body into pieces

Theni (TN), Feb 18 (PTI) In a macabre incident in Tamil Nadu, an engineer was allegedly poisoned to death by his mother before she chopped him into pieces, apparently frustrated over his tipsy ways, police said on Tuesday.

The incident happened near neighbouring Cumbum.

The headless torso of the victim Vigneswaran, in his late 20s, was earlier found with his limbs chopped and police had investigated the matter after registering a case.

The body parts were strewn in different parts of the town, they said.
