India: Northeast Delhi mosques appeal for peace

New Delhi, Feb 28 (PTI) Local mosques in northeast Delhi appealed on Friday for maintaining peace and harmony in the riot-hit area.

The mosques appealed to people to be united and not fall prey to rumours, urging people to report about suspicious people to the authorities and cooperate with the police.

"In case of any emergency, please call on 112," the announcement said.

Delhi violence: Toll rises to 39, some signs of normalcy

New Delhi, Feb 28 (PTI) The death toll in Delhi's communal violence rose to 39 on Friday as clouds of smoke cleared to reveal the extent of the damage from the worst riots in the city in more than three decades and people gingerly stepped out for work and opened shops and other establishments.

While civic workers swept the streets and bylanes of northeast Delhi littered with bricks, broken glass and other detritus of three days of communal clashes, some shopkeepers sorted through the charred remains of their vandalised and burnt shops.

India: 5-year-old girl raped by family acquaintance in Odisha

Kendrapara (Odisha), Feb 28 (PTI) A five-year-old girl was allegedly raped by a man known to her family in Kendrapara district, police said on Friday.

The suspect has been detained for allegedly committing the crime on Thursday night, Inspector of Pattamundai police station Rakesh Tripathy said.

India: No decision taken yet on Muslim quota in Maha

Mumbai, Feb 28 (PTI) Shortly after NCP leader and his cabinet colleague Nawab Malik stated that the Maharashtra government will provide five per cent quota to Muslims, senior minister Eknath Shinde said no such decision had been taken.

Leaders of the ruling Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) -- which comprises Shiv Sena, Nationalist Congress Party and Congress -- will take a call on the issue after discussions, Shinde, Urban Development Minister and a senior Sena leader, said.

Death toll rises to 32 in religious violence in India's capital

NEW DELHI (Reuters) - At least 32 people have been killed in the deadliest violence to engulf India’s capital New Delhi in decades as a heavy deployment of security forces brought an uneasy calm on Thursday, a police official said.

The violence began over a disputed new citizenship law on Monday but led to clashes between Muslims and Hindus in which hundreds were injured. Many suffered gunshot wounds, while arson, looting and stone-throwing has also taken place.
