India: Naxals destabilising country, misleading people: Patil

Shirdi, Mar 1 (PTI) Amidst protests against the new citizenship law, Maharashtra BJP chief Chandrakant Patil on Sunday accused the "Leftists, urban and rural Naxals" of trying to destabilise the country and mislead people over different issues.

The former Maharashtra minister also said that as the government has crushed the Naxals in the last five years, "silent Naxalism" has started and misleading people was part of it.

India: Jajmau tanneries face another spell of closure

Kanpur: What annoys tannery owners in Jajmau is the closure order of their industries against the damage detected in the common header of the line carrying treated water from Common Effluent Treatment Plant and Sewage Treatment Plant to an irrigation canal.

Though, it has also been learnt that the work on a deep sewer line goes through Pyondi village in Jajmau area for over a fortnight. Sooner it will be rectified, the tanneries will start operating.

The tanneries will be opened after repairing of the damaged line,  it was also learnt.

Muhyiddin Yassin Sworn In As Malaysia’s New Prime Minister

Muhyiddin was appointed following the abrupt resignation of 94-year-old Mahathir Mohamad, who had been in office since the general elections in 2018.

India: Punjab to reduce govt employees' retirement age to 58 years, give free education up to class 12

Chandigarh, Feb 28 (PTI) Reducing government employees' retirement age from 60 to 58, free education for all students up to Class 12 and a debt waiver for landless farmers were some of the major announcements made by Punjab Finance Minister Manpreet Singh Badal in the 2020-21 budget on Friday.

Badal on Friday presented a Rs 1,54,805 crore budget in the state Assembly here.

India: Situation peaceful in riot-hit northeast Delhi

New Delhi, Feb 29 (PTI) The situation in northeast Delhi was peaceful Saturday morning with residents gradually coming to terms with the damage in communal riots in the area earlier this week.

Security personnel have been conducting flag marches and holding regular consultations with locals to assuage their fears. They are also urging residents to not pay attention to rumours on social media and report them to the police.

India: Forex reserves up by USD 29 mn to record USD 476.12 bn

Mumbai, Feb 28 (PTI) India's foreign exchange reserves inched up by USD 29 million to a fresh lifetime high of USD 476.122 billion in the week to February 21, aided by an increase in the value of gold holdings, Reserve Bank data showed on Friday.

The forex kitty had zoomed by USD 3 billion to USD 476.092 billion in the previous reporting week.

India: HC grants anticipatory bail to Catholic priest accused of sexually assault

Kochi,Feb 28 (PTI) The Kerala High Court on Friday granted anticipatory bail to a Catholic priest, accused of sexually assaulting a woman in Kozhikode in 2017.

Granting the relief to accused priest Manoj Plakootam, the Court directed him to be present before the Investigating Officer within 10 days.

India: Barmer SP removed over custodial death of Dalit man

Jaipur, Feb 28 (PTI) Barmer Superintendent of Police Sharad Chowdhary and a circle officer were removed from their posts over the custodial death of a 25-year-old Dalit man, the Rajasthan Assembly was told on Friday.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Shanti Dhariwal informed the House during the Zero Hour that no case was registered against scrap dealer Jeetu Khateek, who was detained by the police on Wednesday evening over suspicions that he was involved in a theft.

Khateek's family has alleged he was taken into illegal custody and beaten to death.

India: Convict in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination Nalini moves HC

Chennai, Feb 28 (PTI) In a fresh litigation, Nalini Sriharan, life convict in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, has moved the Madras High Court seeking a direction to the Tamil Nadu government to release her without waiting for the approval of state governor.

In her petition, which is likely to be taken up for hearing on Monday, she also pleaded the court to declare as unconstitutional the 'failure' of the governor to release her as recommended by the state cabinet.
