India: 28 killed in rain-related incidents in UP

Lucknow (UP) Mar 13 (PTI) A total of 28 people, including women and children, were killed in various rain-related incidents in Uttar Pradesh in the last 24 hours, officials said on Friday.

The state has been witnessing rain and thunderstorms since Thursday.

"In Uttar Pradesh, 28 people have died in incidents related to rain and hailstorm in the past 24 hours," Information Department Director Shishir said here.

India: Coronavirus is at 'containment stage': Kejriwal

New Delhi, Mar 13 (PTI) Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said on Friday that the novel coronavirus outbreak was at the "containment stage", adding that the Centre and the Delhi government had been working together to deal with it.

Kejriwal urged the people to not hoard sanitisers and masks, which is he said was not needed for those who are healthy as COVID-19 was not an airborne disease.

India: Teenage girl raped by two youth in UP's Mahoba

Banda (UP), Mar 14 (PTI) A 17-year-old girl was allegedly raped by two men in neighbouring Mahoba district of Uttar Pradesh, police said on Saturday.

The incident took place on Thursday but the case was reported in Mataundh police station of Banda district by the girl's family only on Friday.

Sub-Inspector of Mataundh police station Sultan Singh said, "Two youth raped the 17-year-old girl on the pretext of taking her to a nearby jungle. This incident took place on Thursday around 5 pm in Khanna police station area of Mahoba district."

Corona: AMU suspends all classes till March 22

Aligarh, Mar 14 (PTI) The Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) on Saturday suspended all classes, including sessional tests, till March 22 as a precautionary measure in view of novel coronavirus threat.

"During a special meeting of top university officials presided over by Vice Chancellor Prof Tariq Mansoor, it was decided today that all conferences, workshops, educational tours and sports programmes have been postponed till March 31," AMU spokesperson Omar Peerzada told PTI.

India: Prohibitory order clamped in Manipur's Moreh town

Imphal, Mar 14 (PTI) Prohibitory orders under section 144 Crpc was imposed in Moreh town in Manipur's Tengnoupal district after four police commandos were injured in an attack by a mob, an official said on Saturday.

The prohibitory orders in Moreh town, which is close to the Indo-Myanmar border, was issued by the District Magistrate of Tengnoupal, Mayanglangbam Rajkumar on Friday evening for one month, the official said.

Kanpur: Junior class students were surprised to know of the school holidays declared following the Chief Minister's order on Friday. As they were in preparation for appearing at the paper, the news came as a shock to them. 

The holidays were declared in the wake of the Corona infection spreading fast. So, this step was taken as a precautionary measure.

India: No law to back state action: SC on 'name and shame' posters in Lucknow

New Delhi, Mar 12 (PTI) The Supreme Court on Thursday told the Uttar Pradesh government that there is no law as of now to back its action of putting roadside posters of those accused of vandalism during the anti-CAA protests in Lucknow.

A vacation bench of Justices U U Lalit and Aniruddha Bose told Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for Uttar Pradesh, that it is a matter of "great importance".

New Delhi, Mar 13 (PTI) Investor wealth worth nearly Rs 12 lakh crore was wiped off in less than 15 minutes of trade opening on Friday, with benchmarks crashing over 10 per cent on mounting fears over coronavirus pandemic.

The 30-share BSE Sensex plummeted 3,380.59 points, or 10.31 per cent, to 29,397.55. It hit an intra-day low of 29,388.97, falling up to 3,389.17 points.
