India: Colombian woman claims Mumbai cop made sexual advances

Mumbai, Apr 22 (PTI) A 30 year-old Colombian national stuck in Mumbai due to the coronavirus-enforced lockdown has alleged that a junior police officer had made sexual advances on her at a hotel, according to her complaint.

The woman said that she had filed a complaint with the Mumbai Police via an e-mail, which is confirmed by a senior police officer on Wednesday.

Housewives demur check on vegetables' sale at doorstep

KANPUR: Social distancing is good for people but the obstruction in the doorstep delivery of vegetables is not reasonable for housewives. 

Though the residents are strictly following norms set by the district administration,  the housewives, in particular, become irascible and mentally disturbed at hindrance in the availability of very simple things like vegetables to them. They need of everyday need at their place of residence. They cannot venture to go out, as they say.

Lockdown reveals fresh air, cleaner rivers in India

NEW DELHI (AP) — India’s extended lockdown to curb the coronavirus outbreak has shut down schools, workplaces, industries, transport, and forced people to stay home.

It also led to an unexpected bonus in the country with six out of 10 of the world’s most polluted cities: cleaner air.

“It is a hell of a change,” said Kunal Chopra, who suffers from chronic bronchitis and whose morning walks no longer begin with a shot from an inhaler. “The air is much fresher and my breathing problems have gone down.”

India: 5 jute mills in West Bengal get govt nod to resume ops

Kolkata, Apr 20 (PTI) Five jute mills in West Bengal got the approval of the state government to resume operations amid a huge pending order for packaging materials.

The industry was disappointed with a handful of mills getting approval to operate despite repeated interventions from the Centre which fears that prolonged closure may lead to a shortage of packaging materials, especially foodgrains.

The units have received permission to operate only with 50 workers, according to a mill owner.

Indian Rupee settles 30 paise lower at 76.83 against US dollar

Mumbai, Apr 21 (PTI) The Indian rupee settled for the day lower by 30 paise at 76.83 (provisional) against the US dollar on Tuesday, tracking weak domestic equities and strengthening of the US dollar overseas.

Forex traders said the decline in the rupee was largely due to sharp drop in oil prices and stronger greenback which edged higher past the 100 level mark.

India: Movement of people between Ghaziabad, Delhi banned

Ghaziabad, Apr 21 (PTI) The district administration on Tuesday banned the movement of people between Ghaziabad and Delhi as per lockdown orders, an official said.

However, people with valid passes and engaged in essential and emergency services will be allowed to move between the two cities, District Magistrate Ajay Shankar Pandey said.

IndiaL Police books Jamia students under UAPA

New Delhi, Apr 21 (PTI) Delhi Police has booked Jamia students Meeran Haider and Safoora Zargar under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) in a case related to communal violence in northeast Delhi over the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, said a lawyer.

Haider and Zargar, arrested for allegedly hatching a conspiracy to incite the communal riots in February, are in judicial custody. While Zargar is the media coordinator of Jamia Coordination Committee, Haider is a member of the committee.

Indian presidential palace isolates 500 people in coronavirus alarm

NEW DELHI/KARACHI (Reuters) - About 500 people entered self-isolation at India’s presidential palace on Tuesday after a worker’s relative tested positive for the coronavirus in the latest alarm close to public figures as the pandemic spreads through densely populated South Asia.

Afghan President Ashraf Ghani and his wife had tested negative for the coronavirus, his spokesman said, after at least 20 palace officials were infected last week.

India: Youngsters enjoying kite flying in lockdown

KANPUR: Kite flying has developed as a time-pass for young and old alike during the pandemic's lockdown days. So long as one's sight reaches, there appears kites flying high in the cloudy or blue sky.

As the youngsters are free from their routine studies they are getting enough time to engage in kite-flying to space on the roof or the terrace while the elders also make it in their free time.
