India: Truck kills 6 stray cattle in UP's Banda

Banda, Aug 23 (PTI) Six stray cattle were killed and as many injured after a speeding truck ran over them at a village here, police said on Sunday.

The truck driver has been arrested and a case registered, they said.

The incident occurred on the Banda-Tanda road in Sahinga village on Saturday, Station House Officer of the Tindwari police station Neeraj Kumar Singh said.

He said veterinary doctors have buried the dead cattle after conducting post-mortem.

Over 8.3 million people affected by floods in India's Bihar state

NEW DELHI, Aug. 22 (Xinhua) -- Floods in India's eastern state of Bihar have affected over 8.3 million people, officials said Saturday.

According to Bihar Disaster Management Department (BDMD), the ongoing floods have inundated 16 districts across the state affecting a population of 8,362,451.

According to officials, the floods have so far claimed 27 lives in six districts, including 11 in Darbhanga, six in Muzaffarpur, four in West Champaran and two each in Khagaria, Saran and Siwan.

India’s virus caseload tops 3 million as disease moves south

NEW DELHI (AP) — India’s coronavirus caseload topped 3 million on Sunday, with the country leading the world in new infections as the disease marched through impoverished rural areas in the north and the wealthier but older populations of the south.

Health authorities reported 10,339 new cases and 912 deaths, bringing the total to 3,044,940. The number of new infections reported Sunday marked a sharp decline from the previous 18 days, when India had reported more than 60,000 cases daily.

Experts flag risks in India’s use of rapid tests for virus

These rapid tests boosted India’s testing levels nearly five-fold within two months. But government numbers suggest some parts of the country might have become over reliant on the faster tests, which can miss infections. Experts warn that safely using them requires frequent retesting, something that isn’t always happening.

Kanpur: These days unnecessary traffic jams on the Highways are proving to be a headache for Traffic police.

The problem arises owing to fatal pits on the Highways passing through the city.

There is no dearth of pits, trenches on the roads extending from Jajmau Pul to Ramadevi. The bridge is also covered with an awful view.

Almost every day there remain jams on the road extending from Jajmau to Rama Devi. The smaller stones are scattered all over the road. Waterlogging into the pits can also be seen.

India: ED questions Sushant's sister in money laundering case

New Delhi, Aug 21 (PTI) The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Friday questioned and recorded the statement of Priyanka Singh, elder sister of Sushant Singh Rajput, in connection with a money laundering case probe linked to the actor's death, officials said.

The statement of Priyanka Singh was recorded under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) in Delhi, they said.

India: Sikkim Health Minister tests positive for COVID-19

Gangtok, Aug 21 (PTI) Sikkim Health Minister Dr M K Sharma tested positive for COVID-19 on Friday.

The minister himself announced the news of his testing positive for COVID-19 in a brief Facebook post.

"I, Dr MK Sharma, Health Minister of Sikkim, would like to inform all the Sikkimese people that I developed symptoms of COVID-19 and got myself tested today and the results have come as positive," he said.

Sharma said that he was doing fine and confined himself in isolation.

India: Farooq Abdullah holds meeting with 2nd batch of leaders

Srinagar, Aug 21 (PTI) National Conference (NC) president Farooq Abdullah on Friday held a meeting with the second batch of party leaders who were under detention for over a year, a party spokesman said.

"The attendees included Mubarak Gul, Choudhary Ramzaan, Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi, Shameema Firdous and Basharat Bukhari. These members who were under detention or house arrest met Abdullah after over a year," the spokesman said.
