India: Satya Pal Malik sworn in as new Meghalaya Governor

Shillong, Aug 19 (PTI) Satya Pal Malik was on Wednesday sworn in as the 19th Governor of Meghalaya during a ceremony at the Raj Bhavan here.

Chief Justice of Meghalaya High Court Justice Biswanath Somadder administered the oath of office and secrecy to Malik in the presence of Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma and his cabinet colleagues.

Malik succeeded Tathagata Roy whose five-year tenure ended in May.

A Rashtrapati Bhavan communique on Tuesday said Malik, Governor of Goa, is transferred and appointed as Governor of Meghalaya.

India: Another 2 related to Kanpur terror surrender before special court

Kanpur, Aug 20 (PTI) Two men wanted for their alleged roles in the killing of eight policemen, including a deputy SP, during an ambush last month surrendered before a special court in Kanpur Dehat, officials said on Thursday.

Superintendent of Police (Rural) Brajesh Srivastava told PTI that the two accused of Kanpur ambush -- Vishnu Pal Singh Yadav alias Jiledar, a village head, and Shivam Dubey -- surrendered on Wednesday.

India: KMC set to resolve crises of ragged buildings & waterlogging

Kanpur: If on the one hand there are existing old and weak buildings in the city's corporation limits, on another hand denizens are not free from the waterlogging crisis here.

According to the available municipal records, there are as many as 641 old and weak buildings in the city areas. A total of 312 such buildings are standing in zone one of the municipal areas at present. As many as 500 applications have been submitted for the dismantling of old and weak buildings to the Nagar Nigam in five days.

India: Youth arrested for tearing national flag

Ranaghat (WB), Aug 20 (PTI) A youth has been arrested for allegedly tearing the national flag in an inebriated state in West Bengal's Nadia district, police said on Thursday.

The incident occurred in School Para locality in Dhantala police station area on Wednesday, they said.

The youth, Chanchal Biswas, was arrested after locals made a video of the act and forwarded it to the police, an officer said.

The accused has claimed that he had acted under the influence of alcohol, he added.

India: Indore gets cleanest city tag for 4th time in a row

New Delhi, Aug 20 (PTI) Indore was adjudged India's cleanest city for the fourth straight year in the central government's cleanliness survey announced on Thursday.

The second and third positions in the category were grabbed by Surat and Navi Mumbai respectively.

Varanasi has been the adjudged the 'best Ganga town' in the central government's cleanliness survey.

The Swachh Survekshan awards 2020 were announced by Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Hardeep Singh Puri at a ceremony.

India: Medical officer held for killing female doctor in UP

Agra (UP), Aug 20 (PTI) A medical officer was arrested from Uttar Pradesh's Jalaun district for allegedly killing a 26-year-old female doctor of the S N Medical College in Agra, officials said on Thursday.

Yogita Gautam's body was found with injury marks along an isolated road stretch in Agra's Dauki area on Wednesday morning and her identity ascertained in the evening, the officials said.

India: 2 crore jobs lost in last 4 months

New Delhi, Aug 19 (PTI) Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday alleged that around two crore people lost their jobs in the last four months amid the coronavirus pandemic and asserted that the "truth about unemployment" cananot be hidden from the country.

Citing a media report, he said in a tweet in Hindi, "In the last 4 months, around 2 crore people have lost their jobs. The future of 2 crore families is in the dark. The truth about unemployment and destruction of the economy cannot be hidden from the country by peddling fake news and hatred on Facebook."

India: President accepts Ashok Lavasa's resignation as EC

New Delhi, Aug 19 (PTI) President Ram Nath Kovind has accepted the resignation of Ashok Lavasa as Election Commissioner, a notification by the Ministry of Law and Justice said on Wednesday.

Lavasa had on Tuesday sent his resignation as Election Commissioner to the Rashtrapati Bhavan.

"...the President is pleased to accept the resignation tendered by Shri Ashok Lavasa, Election Commissioner with effect from the 31st August, 2020," the notification said.

India: Bus hijacked with passengers on board in Agra

Agra/Lucknow, Aug 19 (PTI) A privately-operated bus with 34 passengers on board was hijacked by recovery agents of a finance company in Uttar Pradesh's Agra on Wednesday morning, officials said.

The incident took place in the Malpura police station area when the bus was en route to Panna in Madhya Pradesh from Gurgaon in Haryana, according to police.

Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Awanish Awasthi said the bus driver, staff and passengers are safe.

India: Kohli static at 2nd spot, Bumrah slips to 9th in ICC Test player rankings

Dubai, Aug 18 (PTI) Skipper Virat Kohli remained at the second position in the batting chart which has two more Indians in the top 10, but pacer Jasprit Bumrah slipped to the ninth spot among bowlers in the latest ICC Test player rankings issued on Tuesday.

Kohli held on to second spot with 886 points, while Cheteshwar Pujara (766) and Ajinkya Rahane (726) continued to remain static at the eighth and 10th positions respectively in the batting list, which is being headed by Australia's Steve Smith.
