Delhi Police Inspector dies of COVID-19

New Delhi, Aug 18 (PTI) A 51-year-old Delhi Police Inspector died due to coronavirus at a city hospital on Tuesday morning, officials said.

Sanjay Sharma, a 1997 batch officer, was posted at the Police Control Room (PCR) department in south zone, they said.

He was was suffering from pneumonia and was admitted in the Indian Spinal Injuries Centre in Vasant Kunj on Saturday. Later, he was found COVID-19 positive, a senior police officer said.

The inspector lost the battle and died on Tuesday morning at the hospital, the officer said.

India: Three men booked for raping a woman

Rishikesh, Aug 18 (PTI) Three men have been booked on charges of raping a woman and making viral a video of the crime, police said on Tuesday.

On the basis of the woman's complaint, a case under different sections of the Indian Penal Code, including section 376 (rape), and the IT Act has been registered against the accused, Rishikesh Kotwali in-charge Ritesh Shah said.

The accused have been named as Punit Kalra, Prince Sondhi and Manpreet Singh.

India: MP minister Mohan Yadav tests positive for corona

Bhopal, Aug 18 (PTI) Madhya Pradesh Higher Education Minister Mohan Yadav said on Tuesday that he has tested positive for the coronavirus infection.

"My corona test comes out to be positive so I have admitted to Aurobindo Hospital. By the grace of Baba Mahakal I am healthy," Yadav said in a tweet on Tuesday night.

He is a fifth member of Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan's council of ministers to test positive for the viral infection.

India: Parents told to be attentive towards wards for live classes

The KANPUR: Students have embraced the new idea of online classes but now, the teachers are revealing the hard truths of the class strictness, perceiving the learners' disinterestedness in the live classes. 

Parents have been urged to be strict and find time to enable their respective wards to remain honest by following rules explained for the online classes.

Several schools are undertaking the task of running online classes. There may be problems with them.

India: Kasmiri separatists attack security forces, three killed

Srinagar, Aug 17 (PTI) Two CRPF jawans and a policeman were killed in a militant attack in Baramulla district of Jammu and Kashmir on Monday, police said.

Militants attacked a security forces party at a 'naka' in Kreeri area of Baramulla district in north Kashmir this morning, a police official said.

He said two CRPF personnel and a special police officer (SPO) of Jammu and Kashmir police were killed in the firing.

Security forces have cordoned off the area and a hunt has been launched to nab the militants.

India: Several Muslims from Shaheen Bagh join Delhi BJP

New Delhi, Aug 16 (PTI) Several members of the minority Muslim community from Shaheen Bagh area, that was the centre of the anti-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) protests here, joined the BJP on Sunday in the presence of its Delhi unit leaders, said a party statement.

The induction ceremony took place in the presence of president of the BJP's Delhi unit Adesh Gupta and national vice-president and incharge of Delhi unit Shyam Jaju, it said.

Lockdown deaths in India ignite debate on police brutality

NEW DELHI (AP) — For two and a half minutes the popular Indian radio DJ described in graphic detail what she said was the torture and killing of a father and son in police custody.

The father was arrested for flouting coronavirus lockdown rules by keeping his mobile phone shop in southern India open past curfew, Suchitra Ramadurai alleged in a video posted to her Instagram. The man’s son went to check on him at the police station and both were beaten so badly they were still bleeding when they appeared before a judge the next day.

India: Rise in COVID-19 cases in rural areas worrying

Jalna, Aug 15 (PTI) Maharashtra Health Minister Rajesh Tope on Saturday expressed concern over the rise in COVID-19 in rural areas of the state due to the influx of migrants from Mumbai.

Speaking at an Independence Day function at the Collectorate, the minister said despite the rise in infections, the recovery rate in the state was high.

While the COVID-19 tally in Jalna had reached 3,000, more than 2,000 patients had recovered from the infection, said Tope, who is also the guardian minister of the district.
