India: Stones thrown at Minorities Bhavan

Mangaluru, Aug 14 (PTI) Window panes of the Maulana Azad Minorities Bhavan at Pandeshwar in the city were damaged in stone pelting by unidentified miscreants late Thursday night, police sources said.

The incident came to light Friday morning.

Three window panes of the building were broken in the stone pelting.

Based on a complaint from the taluk extension officer of the minorities department, Mangaluru South police have registered a case and begun investigations.

India: Rrapist held after shootout in UP's Hapur

Hapur (UP), Aug 14 (PTI) A man evading arrest for over a week after allegedly raping a six-year-old girl was nabbed on Friday by police after a shootout in a jungle near here, an official said.

The police said the accused, a resident of Amroha in Uttar Pradesh, was on the run for over a week after raping the girl in Gadh Mukteshwar town of Hapur distrct.

The police had also announced a reward on his arrest.

India: Lockdown lifted in Thiruvananthapuram city limits

Thiruvananthapuram, Aug 14 (PTI): The over a month-long COVID-19 induced lockdown in Thiruvananthapuram corporation limits will be lifted from midnight following which malls, hypermarkets and salons will open Saturday morning.

The order will be effective only in non-containment zones, a circular from the District Collector, Dr Navjot Khosa said.

Lockdown was imposed in the corporation limits on July 5.

India: Man arrested in UP's NOIDA after colleague alleges rape

Noida (UP), Aug 14 (PTI) A 25-year-old man working for a telecommunication company in Uttar Pradesh's Noida was arrested on Friday over an allegation of rape from a colleague, officials said.

In a complaint made at the Sector 20 police station, the 22-year-old woman alleged that she was raped by her colleague on Thursday when a group of employees of their firm had gone out for a party at a local hotel, they said.

India: Efforts on to make Ladakh carbon neutral

New Delhi, Aug 15 (PTI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said efforts are on to make the Union Territory of Ladakh a carbon-neutral region.

Carbon neutrality means having a balance between emitting carbon and absorbing it from the atmosphere in carbon sinks. It is significant as greenhouse gas or carbon emissions adversely affect the climate.

India: Over 650 villages in 15 UP districts hit by floods

Lucknow, Aug 14 (PTI) Over 650 villages in 15 districts of Uttar Pradesh are affected by floods and 384 of them have been cut off from other parts of the state, an official said on Friday.

The Sharda river at Lakhimpur Kheri's Palliakalan and the Saryu at Barabanki's Elgin Bridge, Ayodhya and Ballia's Turtipar are flowing above the danger mark, Relief Commissioner Sanjay Goyal told reporters.
