India: Another member of Terrorist Vikas Dubey's gang arrested

Kanpur (UP), Aug 15 (PTI) Another accused of the Kanpur ambush during which eight policemen were killed by henchmen of slain gangster Vikas Dubey was arrested here in Chaubepur on Saturday, police said.

Rajendra Kumar Mishra, a resident of Bikru village in Chaubepur, was carrying a cash reward of Rs 50,000, Superintendent of Police (Rural) Brajesh Srivastava said.

"Testing times" for Indian democracy: Sonia Gandhi

New Delhi, Aug 15 (PTI) In her Independence Day message, Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Saturday said these were "testing times" for Indian democracy and people need to introspect if there is freedom in the country to ask questions, disagree or seek accountability.

Since independence, India has tested its democratic values from time to time and constantly developed them, Gandhi said.

India: Colonel Santosh Babu's widow becomes Deputy Collector

Hyderabad, Aug 15 (PTI): The widow of Colonel Santosh Babu, who died in the recent violent clash with the Chinese troops, has submitted a report on her joining as Deputy Collector.

Santoshi was appointed to the post and handed over the report to Chief Secretary Somesh Kumar on Saturday, an official press release said here.

As per Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao's decision, Santoshi was appointed as Deputy Collector in the Revenue Department.

India: BJP leader Utpal Parrikar tests coronavirus positive

Panaji, Aug 16 (PTI) BJP leader Utpal Parrikar, who is the son of former Goa chief minister Manohar Parrikar, said he has tested positive for coronavirus and got admitted to a hospital on the advice of doctors.

After his test results came out, Uptal Parrikar told reporters on Saturday evening that he tested positive for COVID-19. "Its a mild infection, so I would be home quarantined, he then said.

On Sunday, he tweeted saying, "On advice of Doctors and to take proper line of treatment, I've got admitted to Hospital. Thank you everyone for the wishes.

India: Dr Kafeel Khan's detention under NSA extended by 3 months

Lucknow, Aug 16 (PTI) The Uttar Pradesh government has extended by three months the detention of physician Kafeel Khan under the National Security Act for his alleged provocative speech during the anti-Citizenship Amendment Act protests.

Khan was arrested in January for delivering the speech at Aligarh Muslim University on December 10, 2019. It is the second time his detention under the stringent law has been extended by another three months, this time beyond August 13.

India: RBI to pay Rs 57,128 crore to govt

Mumbai, Aug 14 (PTI) The Reserve Bank of India board on Friday approved a dividend payout of Rs 57,128 crore to the government, a move in line with the Budget expectation but may not help plug a huge revenue hole created by the pandemic and slowing economy.

The surplus transfer of Rs 57,128 crore for the accounting year 2019-20 compared with Rs 1.76 lakh crore transferred last year, which included Rs 1.23 lakh crore as dividend and Rs 52,637 crore excess provisions identified as per the revised Economic Capital Framework (ECF).

India: 65,002 new corona cases; death toll rises to 49,036

New Delhi, Aug 15 (PTI) A spike of 65,002 cases took India's COVID-19 tally past 25 lakh on Saturday just a day after it reached the 24-lakh mark, while 18 lakh people have so far recuperated from the disease pushing the recovery rate to 71.61 per cent, Union health ministry data showed.

India has been reporting over 60,000 cases daily since August 7, barring August 11 when the country registered 53,601 new instances of the infection.
