India plans to launch third moon mission next year

NEW DELHI, Oct. 21 (Xinhua) -- The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) plans to launch its third moon mission Chandrayaan-3 in June next year, the state-run broadcaster All India Radio said Friday.

The broadcaster said ISRO plans to send Indian astronauts into space by 2024.

India's federal junior minister for the department of space Jitendra Singh has said the progress of the third moon mission Chandrayaan-3 was hampered due to the COVID-19 pandemic last year.

US repatriates 307 antiquities valued USD 4 mn stolen, trafficked from India

New York, Oct 19 (PTI) A globe spanning, 15-year investigation has led to the repatriation of 307 antiquities by the US that were stolen and trafficked from India and valued at nearly four million dollars, the majority seized from disgraced art dealer Subhash Kapoor.

Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg announced on Monday the return of 307 antiquities valued at nearly USD 4 million to the people of India.

Indian Rupee hits record low of 83.06 against US dollar

Mumbai, Oct 20 (PTI) The rupee depreciated 6 paise to a record low of 83.06 against the US dollar in opening trade on Thursday due to a stronger greenback overseas and unrelenting foreign fund outflows.

Besides, a sell-off in domestic equities and risk-averse sentiments weighed on the local unit, forex traders said.

At the interbank foreign exchange, the domestic unit opened weak at 83.05 against the dollar, then slipped further to quote 83.06, a fall of 6 paise over its previous close. The local currency also hit a high of 83.07 in early deals.

India: Teen girl found dead with rope tied around her neck in UP

Maharajganj (UP), Oct 20 (PTI) A 12-year-old girl was found dead with a rope wrapped around her neck here, police said on Thursday

The incident happened in Lakshmipur village on Wednesday, they said.

According to the police, the teenager's parents had gone to work in the field when the incident happened.

After returning home in the evening, they found their daughter dead, police said, adding the girl appears to have died of strangulation.

The body has been sent for post-mortem examination, they said.

India: 16-year-old girl gang-raped in UP's Sultanpur

Sultanpur (UP), Oct 20 (PTI) A 16-year-old girl was allegedly raped by two men from her village here, police said on Thursday.

According to a complaint filed by the minor's family, the incident happened on October 17 in Dhammaur police station area, they said.

They alleged the accused even threatened the girl not to tell anyone about it.

The girl has been admitted to the district hospital for treatment, Dhammaur police station in-charge Shyam Sundar said.

India: Cong prez polls; Counting of votes begins in Kharge vs Tharoor contest

New Delhi, Oct 19 (PTI) Counting of votes began on Wednesday in the Congress presidential polls in which senior leaders Mallikarjun Kharge and Shashi Tharoor faced-off for the post of AICC chief.

The counting of the votes, which was scheduled to begin at 10 am at the AICC headquarters here, started around 10:20 am.

India: Irked by constant barking man kills dog in Kanpur's Juhi

Kanpur: Dog's constant barking irked a man in the Juhi area here. The man appeared so tensed as he hit the stray dog on the head with hard things.

The police arrested the man. He told them that he killed the dog because he got irked by its constant barking and in a fit of anger he killed the stray dog by hitting it on its head with a brick.

The shocking incident was caught on CCTV of a shop in the area. The video shows the man, identified as Jackie.

India: Amit Shah to launch MP government's Hindi-medium medical education project today

Bhopal, Oct 16 (PTI) Union Home Minister Amit Shah will on Sunday launch the Madhya Pradesh government's ambitious project to impart medical education in Hindi.

During the day-long visit to the state, the senior BJP leader will also lay the foundation stone of a new airport terminal in Gwalior, according to official information.

He will unveil Hindi medical textbooks at a programme at Bhopal's Lal Parade Ground around 12 noon. Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan will preside over the programme.

India: DMK warns of protest in Delhi if Hindi language imposed on TN stae

Chennai, Oct 15 (PTI) Ruling DMK's youth wing secretary and Chief Minister M K Stalin's son Udayanidhi Stalin on Saturday warned that the party would stage a protest against the BJP-led Centre in Delhi if Hindi is thrust upon Tamil Nadu.

The Chepauk-Thiruvallikeni legislator, who led a massive protest near the landmark Valluvar Kottam here, said that the party would not remain a mute spectator if the sentiments of the people are disregarded by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led Union government.
