India: UP HC quashes detention under NSA of anti-Dalit violence accused

Allahabad, Dec 7 (PTI) The Allahabad High Court on Monday quashed a detention order under stringent National Security Act and directed forthwith release of the detenue.

A bench of justices Pritinker Diwaker and P K Srivastava ordered the release of detenue Javed Siddiqui, arrested under the NSA allegedly for triggering violence against Dalits in Jaunpur district early this year.

The bench ordered "forthwith release" of Siddiqui, saying that the detention order against him was passed in undue haste by the executive authority.

Nokia starts production of next generation 5G equipment in India

New Delhi, Dec 8 (PTI) Telecom gear maker Nokia on Tuesday said it has started production of 5G equipment in India and the equipment are being shipped to countries that are in advanced stages of deploying the next generation technology.

The roll out of 5G services in India is dependent on spectrum auction as telecom operators need suitable wireless frequencies to start 5G in the country.

India: Shops, commercial establishments closed in Punjab in view of 'Bharat Bandh' call by farmers

Chandigarh, Dec 8 (PTI) Shops and commercial establishments remained shut at many places in Punjab on Tuesday morning in view of a 'Bharat Bandh' called by agitating farmer unions to protest the Centre's three agri laws.

Petroleum dealers in the state closed filling stations to back the call for the nationwide strike. There are over 3,400 fuel pumps in Punjab.

India: Bharat Bandh: Some auto, taxi unions join strike

New Delhi, Dec 8 (PTI) A section of auto and taxi unions on Tuesday joined the 'Bharat Bandh' called by agitating farmer unions to press for repeal of the Centre's agri laws and decided to keep their vehicles off the roads here.

Kamaljeet Gill, President of Sarvodaya Driver Association of Delhi, which represents drivers working with cab aggregators, claimed most of its members were on strike.

"There are around 4 lakh app based cabs in Delhi-NCR. Most of our members are on strike," he said.

India: AAP says CM Kejriwal under house arrest after meeting protesting farmers

New Delhi, Dec 8 (PTI) The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Tuesday alleged that Delhi Police has put Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal under house arrest after he met protesting farmers at the Singhu border, a claim denied by the city police.

Kejriwal had visited the Singhu border on Monday and reviewed facilities for farmers protesting against the agri marketing laws.

Addressing a press conference, AAP spokesperson Saurabh Bhardwaj claimed the Delhi Police has put Kejriwal under house arrest.

India: Minister calls for peaceful bandh; security tightened

Bengaluru, Dec 7 (PTI): Security arrangements have been made across Karnataka in the wake of 'Bharat Bandh' called for by farmers tomorrow against new agri-marketing laws, Home Minister of the state Basavaraj Bommai on Monday said.

While seeking the cooperation of the organisers of the bandh to maintain peace on the day, the Minister said, "Necessary bandobast has been made by police in Bengaluru city and all districts for tomorrow's protest."

India: Property dealer held for raping elderly woman

Panaji, Dec 7 (PTI) A 34-year-old property dealer was arrested in Goa on Monday for allegedly raping an elderly woman under the pretext of showing her a property in a forested area near here, police said.

The accused, Anil Tigga, took the woman, who is in her 60s, to a forested area on the outskirts of Panaji where he allegedly raped her, an Agassaim police station official said.

The accused has been arrested on the charge of rape, he added.

India, Israel review ties in key areas

New Delhi, Dec 7 (PTI) India and Israel on Monday carried out a comprehensive review of their cooperation in an array of areas including defence and security, cyberspace, counter-terrorism and energy.

At a virtual meeting of India-Israel foreign office consultations, the two sides also discussed their respective national approaches to mitigate the impact of COVID-19 pandemic and ongoing collaboration in medical research, the Ministry of External Affairs said.

India: PTI photographer beaten in UP, cops initially refuse to act

New Delhi, Dec 7 (PTI) A PTI photographer and his fiancee were beaten up Monday in Uttar Pradesh's Muradnagar by unidentified men who picked up a fight with him while he was travelling to Delhi on his motorcycle.

Police at the Muradnagar post refused to register photographer Ravi Choudhary's complaint against the men, who were in a Bolero jeep that had Bharat Sarkar (Government of India) written on it.

However, officers later assured him that action will be taken in the case.
