India: 14-year-old girl gang raped in UP's Banda

Banda (UP), Sep 2 (PTI) A 14-year-old girl was allegedly gang raped at a village in the Girwan area here, police said on Thursday.

The incident took place on August 26 when the girl was returning home. She was raped by three men, all aged around 22-23 years, Girwa Station House Officer (SHO) Arjun Singh said.

An FIR was registered under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act on August 31 on a complaint from family members, he said.

India: Kanpur comes to be UP's only place for intra-nasal vaccination trial

Kanpur: This is the only place in the state where intranasal vaccine trials against Covidvirus are being done, as news reports said.

As many as 30 adult volunteers including doctors, their family members and others have administered the first dose of the intranasal vaccine. The second dose will be given after 28 days to the volunteers.

Another 20 people will be administered this vaccine over the next few days.

India Announces First Official Contact With Taliban In Doha

NEW DELHI, Sept 1 (NNN-PTI) – India established the first official contact with the Taliban, as India’s ambassador to Qatar held talks with a top Taliban leader yesterday, an official at India’s Ministry of External Affairs, said.

The meeting took place at the Taliban’s request, said the Ministry, in a written statement.

In the statement, the ministry said that, India’s ambassador to Qatar, Deepak Mittal, met Sher Mohammad Abbas Stanekzai, head of the Taliban’s Political Office in Doha, at India’s embassy in Doha.

India: Offline classes still not attracting students to school

Kanpur: There was a throng of the students outside the senior secondary school in the afternoon here. 

They were readying to return from school. Some of them even got on the four-wheeler, while others were mounting on the two-wheeler. A few were moving onward on their bicycles respectively.

As the road was not wider the gathering of a few students presented a view of the crowd. The moment vehicles passed there was ample space.

India: police arrest three in marriage scheme scam

Kanpur:  Three persons, including an employee of the social welfare department, have been arrested by the Barra police here. They have been held in connection with the marriage scheme scam. They were allegedly found to be involved in the misappropriation of the funds.

According to the news reports, a clerk of the social welfare department and the in-charge of the marriage grant, a fake applicant and a middleman have been nabbed.

All of the three persons have been booked under the relevant sections of IPC and sent to the jail after being produced before the magistrate.

India: GDP growth rebounds to 20.1 pc in Q1 on low base

New Delhi, Aug 31 (PTI) India's economic growth surged to 20.1 per cent in the April-June quarter of this fiscal, helped by a low base of the year-ago period, despite a devastating second wave of COVID-19.

The gross domestic product (GDP) had contracted by 24.4 per cent in the corresponding April-June quarter of 2020-21, according to data released by the National Statistical Office (NSO) on Tuesday.

The government had imposed a nationwide lockdown at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic last year.

Vaccinations in rural India increase amid supply concerns

India: Haryana Home Minister discharged from hospital after recovering from Covid

Chandigarh, Aug 31 (PTI) Haryana Home and Health Minister Anil Vij was discharged from the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research here on Tuesday, 10 days after he was admitted as his oxygen levels had dropped.

Immediately after being discharged, the 68-year-old BJP leader attended office at the Haryana Civil Secretariat here.

At the PGIMER, Vij was under the supervision of doctors led by a pulmonary and respiratory medicine specialist.

He had contracted COVID-19 last year and was hospitalised for nearly a month then.

India sends tow Medical Oxygen Plants to Bangladesh

New Delhi, Aug 31 (PTI) India has sent a consignment of medical supplies to Bangladesh to help the country in its fight against the coronavirus pandemic, officials said on Tuesday.

The Indian Navy's offshore patrol vessel INS Savitri is carrying the supplies to Bangladesh and it is expected to reach the country on Thursday.

India: Raj Congress claims infighting in state BJP

Jaipur, Aug 31 (PTI) The Rajasthan Congress on Tuesday claimed that the opposition BJP is getting weakened in the state due to infighting, triggering a sharp reaction from the saffron party.

The BJP leaders are fighting among themselves and the people are watching this, the Rajasthan Congress president Govind Singh Dotasra said.

Instead of pointing out any shortcomings in the government schemes and programmes, they are fighting among themselves. I do not think that the BJP will be able to stand on its feet in future, he added.
