India: BJP hits streets to demand reopening of temples

Mumbai/Pune, Aug 30 (PTI) Workers, senior leaders and former ministers from the opposition BJP on Monday staged protests in several cities in Maharashtra against the MVA government's stand to not reopen temples which remain shut due to COVID-19 restrictions.

At many places, social distancing norms were not adhered to during demonstrations, while an FIR was filed against former minister Sudhir Mungantiwar and party workers in Mumbai for violating COVID-19 rules.

India: Delhi University Teachers' Association opposes implementation of NEP

New Delhi, Aug 31 (PTI) The Delhi University Teachers' Association (DUTA) on Tuesday opposed the implementation of the National Education Policy in the university.

Using the hashtag #RejectNEP, organisations of teachers and students took to Twitter to voice their opposition.

The university's Executive Council meeting is underway where the implementation of the National Education Policy from 2022-23 is on the agenda.

India's topmost court orders demolition of illegal twin towers near Delhi

NEW DELHI, Aug. 31 (Xinhua) -- In a landmark judgment, the country's topmost court - the Supreme Court of India on Tuesday ordered the demolition of two 40-storey residential buildings near Delhi for flouting construction norms.

The illegal twin towers were built by Supertech Ltd.

Holding the builders responsible and accountable for illegally constructing the twin towers in NOIDA, a town adjacent to Delhi but situated in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh, the apex court ordered that the demolition work shall be carried out by the builders themselves at their own cost.

India: Students grin at heavy teaching on school's first day

Kanpur: As schools are opening the students are still not wholly free of fear from the Covid-19 virus. A few of them stayed at home and talked to those who joined offline classes on Tuesday.

The classes strating at 7.30 a.m. continued upto the noon. 

The curiosity among them was apparently clear on the students' tensed faces. After months of closure, they entered the gate of the school. One said, "it was a different kind of entry with the mask on the mouth, sanitising hands and maintaining distance."

India: 6-way highway connecting Kanpur and Allahabad to be ready by 2022

Kanpur: A six-lane highway linking Kanpur and Allahabad will be completed in less than a year but with a higher toll taxes. What compensates the expense burden is availability of speed on the road.

The National Highways Authority of India extended 142-day period to finish the Kanpur-Prayagraj highway.

According to the news, the construction agency had requested the NHAI for another extension given the unavoidable factor but no such reversal has been deciphered.

India: City observes Raksha Bandhan as collective prerogative

Kanpur: The city has observed the festival of Raksha Bandhan in a novel way recently.

As the news goes that two Muslim sisters have been tied rakhis on the wrists of their Hindu brothers to celebrate the occasion in Yasoda Nagar locality here.

This tradition has become a medium to strengthen the bond between two communities and symbolise the fact that the bond shared by brothers and sisters is above any religion or caste. 

Raksha Bandhan is celebrated for several generations and has many tales attributed to it.

India: Kanpur market finds only small-sized Ganesha idols

Kanpur: Strangely enough, the sale of idols for Ganesh Chaturthi beginning from Sept 10, will remain meagre due to the main reason of money matter with the crafters.

What goes around the market is that there will remain a shortage of big sized idols of lord Ganesha. It appears to have disappeared from the city markets, as the news reports go.

Reacting to this situation, the idol makers have stated that it was mainly the financial constraints that are compelling them to prepare small idols.

India: BJP MLA joins TMC in Bengal

Kolkata, Aug 30 (PTI) Bishnupur MLA Tanmoy Ghosh joined the Trinamool Congress on Monday, alleging that his BJP was indulging in vindictive politics.

Speaking to reporters, Ghosh claimed that the BJP was also attempting to trigger chaos among the people of West Bengal, because of which he joined the TMC.

"I urge all to join the TMC for the welfare of West Bengal. There is a need to strengthen the hands of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee," he said.

India: Man kills wife for leaving TV on through the night

Pune, Aug 29 (PTI) A 26-year-old man allegedly killed his wife after harassing her physically and mentally for several months for giving birth to a girl, the immediate provocation being the TV set in the home being on through the night, Pune police said on Sunday.

The incident took place in Chandiwadi in Maval tehsil here on Saturday morning, he said.

Kanpur metro coaches more efficient than lucknow

Kanpur: The metro coaches will arrive here by the first week of September. The rakes are reportedly assembled for the final run at Polytechnic here. It is worth noting that the rakes were supposed to be arrived by September's end previously.

A transport arrangement is being ensured to bring the rakes. All the transport-related formalities, including the assessment of the designated route, have also been conducted, it was reported.

As many as, three metro coaches are being carried by road from Gujarat to the city.
