India: Drain cleaning work reportedly begins by Kanpur Nigam Nigam

Kanpur: City Health Officer Dr Amit Singh said that tenders could not be held due to the code of conduct.

However, he added that the company engaged in the Municipal Corporation's panel tender has been entrusted with the task of cleaning the drains from May 4 to June 30 this year.

He made it clear that tenders could not be called due to the code of conduct. But the company has been entrusted with the task of cleaning the drains.

Kanpur: Plans are afoot to prepare wholly a new lawn tennis court at the Green Park stadium here.

With the construction of a new lawn tennis court at Green Park stadium, the tennis players will have to complete their dreams of improving in the popular tennis game.

This will help the city's tennis players to get another high-quality facility to practice and prove their playing skills.

There are also considerations to provide comprehensive lawn tennis training to aspiring or budding local players at the new tennis court.

4 killed in India's slum fire

NEW DELHI, May 2 (Xinhua) -- Four people were charred to death and seven others suffered burns early Tuesday after a fire broke out inside a slum in the eastern Indian state of Bihar, police said.

The fire broke out near Ramdayalu railway station in Muzaffarpur district, about 70 km north of Patna, the capital city of Bihar.

"In a devastating fire today at a slum here four people were killed and seven others suffered burns," a police officer in Muzaffarpur said. "The injured were immediately removed to Sri Krishna Medical College and Hospital (SKMCH) for treatment."

New Delhi, May 1 (PTI) Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal on Monday urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to go to Jantar Mantar and listen to the "mann ki baat" of protesting women wrestlers, saying that such a step would show that the PM is willing to understand their pain.

Sibal, a senior advocate, has represented the wrestlers in the Supreme Court. His remarks come a day after the 100th episode of Modi's "Mann ki Baat" radio programme was broadcast.

India: Maha building collapse: 2 more bodies recovered, toll rises to 8

Thane, May 1 (PTI) Two more bodies were recovered on Monday from the debris of a two-storey building which collapsed in Bhiwandi town of Maharashtra's Thane district, raising the death toll to eight, officials said.

The work of clearing the debris was underway for the third day, they said.

The building, which housed godowns on the ground and first floors and four families on the top floor, collapsed at 1.45 pm on Saturday at Wardhaman Compound in Valpada of Mankoli area.

11 dead, 4 hospitalized in gas leak in northern India

NEW DELHI (AP) — Eleven people died and four more were hospitalized after a gas leak Sunday in northern India’s Punjab state, local media reported.

The incident occurred at an industrial area in Ludhiana city, but the source of the gas leak is still unclear, police told the Press Trust of India news agency.

India’s National Disaster Response Force sealed off the densely populated area and evacuated residents.

Authorities were trying to ascertain the type of gas in the leak, PTI quoted disaster response officials as saying.
