India: BJP moves EC, seeks derecognition of Congress over Sonia Gandhi's sovereignty remark

New Delhi, May 8 (PTI) The BJP on Monday moved the Election Commission seeking action against Congress leader Sonia Gandhi and derecognition of her party for her use of the term "sovereignty" for Karnataka during the state poll campaign.

A BJP delegation headed by Union minister Bhupender Yadav submitted a memorandum to the poll watchdog over the issue.

India: Go First airline requests early decision on its voluntary insolvency

New Delhi, May 8 (PTI) Crisis-hit airline Go First on Monday requested the National Company Law Tribunal to take an early decision on its voluntary insolvency resolution plea, saying lessors have started deregistering the carrier's aircraft.

On May 4, after a hearing, the tribunal had reserved its order on the budget carrier's petition.

Indian air force jet crash kills 3 civilians

08 May 2023; AA: A MiG-21 jet of the Indian air force crashed in the western state of Rajasthan on Monday morning, killing three civilians on the ground, the air force and officials said.

In a statement, the air force said: "The aircraft had got airborne for a routine operational training sortie from the Air Force Station at Suratgarh. Soon thereafter, the pilot experienced an onboard emergency, following which he attempted to recover the aircraft as per existing procedures."

India: EC should ban PM Modi from campaigning in Karnataka; Gehlot

Jaipur, May 6 (PTI) Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on Saturday urged the Election Commission to ban Prime Minister Narendra Modi from campaigning in poll-bound Karnataka.

Speaking at a press conference here, he alleged that Modi was seeking votes on the basis of religion in the southern state. Gehlot also hit out at the BJP over an alleged threat by a party candidate in the Karnataka polls to wipe out Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and his family.

Indian troops kill 2 rebels in Kashmir in ongoing operations

SRINAGAR, India (AP) — Indian soldiers killed two suspected militants in ongoing counterinsurgency operations in Kashmir on Saturday, officials said, a day after rebels fighting against Indian rule killed five soldiers in the disputed Himalayan region.

Joint army, paramilitary and police teams “spotted and pinned down” the militants before killing one of them in a forested area in the southern Rajouri sector, an Indian army statement said. It said soldiers recovered an automatic rifle and some ammunition and grenades and noted another militant was “likely to be injured.”

India: Kerala HC refuses to stay release of 'The Kerala Story', producer to remove controversial 32,000 figure teaser

Kochi, May 5 (PTI) The Kerala High Court on Friday refused to stay the release of the controversial multi-lingual film 'The Kerala Story' and said the trailer does not contain anything offensive to any particular community as a whole.

A bench of Justices N Nagaresh and Sophy Thomas noted the submission made by the producers that they do not intend to retain an "offending teaser" which contained a statement that "32,000 women" from Kerala were converted and joined a terrorist organisation.

India: UP HC directs judges of district, sessions courts to dispose of bail applications in 2 weeks

Prayagraj (Allahabad), May 5 (PTI) The Allahabad High Court has asked judges of all district and sessions courts in the state to dispose of bail applications within two weeks in light of the recent Supreme Court judgment in the case of Satender Kumar Antil vs CBI.

The directive was issued in a communication by the registrar general of the high court, addressed to all district and sessions judges in Uttar Pradesh.

India: Cong will win at least 141 seats in Karnataka, will abide by party's decision on CM issue

New Delhi, May 6 (PTI) Karnataka Congress chief D K Shivakumar Saturday exuded confidence that his party would win at least 141 seats in the May 10 assembly polls and asserted that he would abide by whatever the party decides on the issue of chief ministership.

In an interview with PTI, Shivakumar said the Congress will get a comfortable majority in Karnataka and the win would open the doors for the Lok Sabha elections as the party's victory in the state in 1978 had done.
