India: Eight core sectors' output up 11.6 pc in August

New Delhi, Sep 30 (PTI) The output of eight core sectors grew by 11.6 per cent in August, mainly due to an uptick in the production of cement, coal, and natural gas, official data showed on Thursday.

The eight infrastructure sectors of coal, crude oil, natural gas, refinery products, fertilisers, steel, cement and electricity had contracted by 6.9 per cent in August 2020 due to the nationwide lockdown imposed to control the spread of COVID-19.

India: Sidhu undermining Punjab CM's authority: Amarinder

Chandigarh, Sep 30 (PTI) Former Punjab chief minister Amarinder Singh kept up his attack on Navjot Singh Sidhu on Thursday and said he thinks that the cricketer-turned-politician is undermining Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi's authority.

He also said the kind of situation that Sidhu has created was never seen before in Punjab.

Asked if Sidhu is undermining Channi's authority, the veteran Congress leader, who returned to Chandigarh on Thursday evening after a visit to Delhi, said, "I think so."

India: Transfer of senior officers takes place at Kanpur

Kanpur: The administrative reshuffle in the UP government has been taken through a notification. A few officers have been shifted, as was reported.

S Sharma has been appointed as DCP at the Police Commissionerate here.

The new Secretary of Kanpur Development Authority will be S Vaishya.

While additional municipal commissioner will be B P Singh.

Last but not least additional commissioner of the Kanpur division will be S P Singh.

India: Fake call centre busted in UP's Ghaziabad

Ghaziabad, Sep 30 (PTI) A fake call centre was busted and two of its members were arrested here, police said on Thursday.

The call centre was operating for the past seven years from an office located behind Gaur Mall of Rajnagar District Centre (RDC) in Kavi Nagar, City Superintendent of Police Nipun Agarwal said.

It has duped a large number of people on the pretext of providing loans to them, he said.

New Delhi, Oct 1 (PTI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday launched the second phase of the Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban and Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation.

In line with the vision of the prime minister, SBM-U 2.0 and AMRUT 2.0 have been designed to realise the aspiration to make all cities garbage free and water secure, according to the Prime Minister's Office (PMO)

Six Killed, 16 Injured After Bus Plunges Into River In Northeast India

NEW DELHI, Sept 30 (NNN-PTI) – At least six people were killed and 16 others injured today, after a bus carrying them plunged into a river, in India’s northeastern state of Meghalaya, police said.

The accident took place early today, at Nongchram, in East Garo Hills, about 185 km west of Shillong, the capital city of Meghalaya.

Rich nations must commit more than $100 bln in climate fight, says India

NEW DELHI, Sept 30 (Reuters) - Rich nations need to commit much more than $100 billion to help poor countries fight climate change due to their high historical share of emissions, India's chief economic adviser said on Thursday, ahead of a UN Climate Change Conference (COP26).

Wealthy nations are under ever-greater pressure to deliver on an unmet pledge, made in 2009, to send $100 billion a year to help finance an adequate response by developing countries to rising global temperatures as the world prepares for COP26.

India: IIT-K to begin e-programs for working youth in new year

Kanpur: IIT- K starts e-programs for the working youth. Abhay Karandikar, director of the institute, said the e-Masters program, wil begin from January, 2022. It will help improve professionals' skills and enhance their career options rapidly.

The qualification for admission to courses launched by IIT Kanpur requires a minimum of 55% marks in graduate or post-graduate programmes.

India: Abandoned newborn baby girl rescued from outer Delhi

New Delhi, Sep 30 (PTI) A one-day old baby girl, who was allegedly abandoned in outer Delhi's Narela area, has been rescued, a DCW statement said on Thursday.

The commission said they received a call on Tuesday morning on its 181 women helpline and were informed that someone has thrown a one-day old baby girl in the bushes in Narela, and the child is lying there unattended.

The Commission informed the Delhi Police. A DCW team facilitated the rescue along with Delhi Police officials, the statement said.

India: Leaving Congress but not joining BJP: Amarinder Singh

New Delhi, Sep 30 (PTI) Scotching speculation, former Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on Thursday made it clear that he was not joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) but said he had no intention of continuing in the Congress, which he said was going downhill with senior leaders being completely ignored.

Singh said he would leave the Congress as he had been "utterly humiliated" and was not trusted.
