SRINAGAR, India (AP) — Government forces have detained at least 500 people in a sweeping crackdown in Indian-controlled Kashmir, local officials said Sunday, following a string of suspected militant attacks and targeted killings in the disputed region.

Assailants fatally shot three Hindus and a Sikh person in the region’s main city of Srinagar this week in a sudden rise in violence against civilians that both pro- and anti-India Kashmiri politicians widely condemned.

Jaipur, Oct 10 (PTI) A 15-year-old girl was allegedly raped by her cousin in Jaipur, police said on Sunday.

Manish (23) has been booked on the basis of a complaint lodged by the girl's family members, Galta Gate police station SHO Satish Kumar said.

The rape survivor's medical examination has been conducted and her statement will be recorded before the magistrate on Monday.

New Delhi, Oct 9 (PTI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday paid tributes to Bhai Taru Singh, a noted Sikh martyr, on his birth anniversary, saying generations to come will never forget his bravery.

His unwavering commitment to truth and justice are deeply inspiring, Modi tweeted.

Born in 1716, Singh laid down his life to protect Sikh values. He was killed by Mughal authorities.

New Delhi, Oct 9 (PTI) Climate activist Disha Ravi on Saturday claimed the government was "diluting" environmental laws by proposing amendments to the Forest Conservation Act and that this "trend" started with the changes made to Environment Impact Assessment rules last year.

The 23-year-old activist, who was arrested in February in connection with a 'toolkit' on farmer protests, also said indigenous people, tribals and environmental defenders are hurt every single day for the very work that will protect everyone.

Jaipur, Oct 9 (PTI) A dalit man was allegedly beaten to death by a group of men in Rajasthan's Hanumangarh district over his love affair, police said on Saturday.

Three people have been detained in this connection, they said.

Taking strong note of the incident, Union Jal Shakti Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat hit out at the Congress-led state government for keeping silence on the matter.

New Delhi, Oct 9 (PTI) He is all for reclaiming "forgotten voices" in the history writing of India, but using it for today's "political misuse" is where the rub lies, Congress leader Shashi Tharoor said on Saturday.

Speaking at the India Today Conclave 2021, Tharoor said today, we are "scratching the wounds and reopening fresh drops of blood emerging from scars that should have been allowed to be healed".

New Delhi, Oct 10 (PTI) The Delhi Police has apprehended a man for allegedly killing his 21-year-old wife and mother-in-law in southwest Delhi's Baba Haridas Nagar area, officials said on Sunday.

The accused has been identified as Mahesh, a resident of Naranum Park in Baba Haridas Nagar, they said.

He has shot dead his wife Nidhi and his mother-in-law Veero (55) over domestic issues, police said.

The weapon has been recovered from his possession and a case under Section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code is being registered, police said.

Kanpur: Reward for information on cops absconding in Kanpur businessman death case has reportedly been hiked.

It has enhanced the amount to Rs one lakh from Rs 25000 for information on each of the six policemen booked in the murder case of  Kanpur businessman, according to a press release. 

Furthermore, it was also made clear that the identity of the informant would be kept secret and the responsibility of his protection would be taken by the Police Commissionerate, Kanpur.

NEW DELHI, Oct. 9 (Xinhua) -- Chief Minister of India's Delhi Arvind Kejriwal Saturday said the national capital could face a power crisis.

Kejriwal said his government has written to the country's Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi, seeking his intervention in making adequate arrangements of coal and gas to power generation plants, so as to ensure electricity supply to the city.

According to Kejriwal, the capital city has been facing a coal shortage since August, which affected power generation from major central generating plants supplying power to Delhi.

Kanpur:  Samajwadi Party’s Chief Akhilesh Yadav is set to begin his state-wide Rath Yatra from October 12. He will emulate the  2011 Yatra. If the party formed a majority government in 2012, the present Yatra will do the same feat, as he guesses.

Akhilesh Yadav said, “We will start our Samajwadi Vijay Yatra from October 12. The Yatra will run from Kanpur to Hamirpur.”
