Kanpur: Kanpur ranks as the fifth most polluted city in Uttar Pradesh, when it comes about the contaminated air.

The impact of this is declared every morning when the district is encircled by a blanket of smog.

This fog of pollution, according to the air quality monitoring system, does not disperse as the day grows larger.

India: Cooperative bank director quits BJP, joins RLD

Muzaffarnagar (UP), Nov 21 (PTI) A senior official of a district cooperative bank resigned from the BJP and joined the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) here.

Sandeep Malik, director of Muzaffarnagar District Cooperative Bank and a former Zila Panchayat member, resigned from the primary membership of the saffron party and joined the RLD.

Malik made the announcement on his political move during a rally by RLD chief Jayant Chaudhary at Baghra here on Saturday.

India: Woman raped in captivity for three days in UP

Muzaffarnagar (UP), Nov 21 (PTI) A 24-year-old woman was allegedly held captive, beaten up and raped for three days here, police said on Sunday.

According to the complaint lodged by the woman with the police, she was forcibly taken to a hotel by a man where she was made to consume beverages laced with sedatives and raped for three days, they said.

The woman also alleged that the man beat her up whenever she tried to defend herself, police said.

They said the woman and the man knew each other.

Heavy rains in southern Indian state kill 17, dozens missing

HYDERABAD, India (AP) — At least 17 people have died and dozens are reported missing in the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh after days of heavy rains, authorities said Saturday.

The state has been hit by intense torrents since Thursday, sparking massive floods in at least five districts.

The death toll rose to 17 late Friday night after three people were killed when a building collapsed, police said. Ten people trapped under the debris were rescued but two are still missing.

India: Rural schools to be upgraded for wide reach in Kanpur district

Kanpur: The District Magistrate has undertaken the task of revamping the face of rural schools, with modular fits and upgrade.

Notably, schools from each development block have been chosen for the program to ensure wide reach and development.

All construction work carried here will be attached with students and will be performed to improve a child-friendly atmosphere on the premises.

Around 30 master trainers from UNICEF have been deployed to complete the task.

India: D S Patwalia is new advocate general of Punjab

Chandigarh, Nov 19 (PTI) Senior advocate D S Patwalia has been appointed as the new advocate general of Punjab, said an official on Friday.

Punjab Congress chief Navjot Singh Sidhu is leant to have been pushing for his appointment.

Patwalia was appointed as the state's top law officer days after the resignation of senior advocate A P S Deol was accepted by the Punjab cabinet.

India: Mentally challenged girl gang-raped in UP

Shahjahanpur (UP), Nov 19 (PTI) A 14-year-old girl mentally challenged girl was allegedly raped by a quack and his accomplice here in the Allahaganj area, police said on Friday.

The incident took place on Tuesday when the girl was going to market, Superintendent of Police S Anand said, adding when the girl was passing by the quake's clinic, he and his accomplice dragged her into the clinic and gang-raped her.

India: Gehlot accuses Modi of mocking farmers in Parliament

Jaipur, Nov 20 (PTI) Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on Saturday said Prime Minister Narendra Modi had "mocked" the farmers in an animated manner and called them "andolanjeevi", but those theatrics were missing when he announced the repeal of three farm laws.

Gehlot claimed that the Modi dispensation decided to repeal the farm laws under pressure of the assembly elections in five states, including Punjab and Uttar Pradesh, and that the government was "scared".
