Kashmir: Shikara rally held at Dal Lake in Srinagar

Srinagar, Jan 23 (PTI) The Tourism Department on Sunday held a colourful Shikara rally at the famous Dal Lake here to woo tourists to the Kashmir valley, an official spokesperson said.

The rally was part of a series of events organised by the department to celebrate the 75th year of Independence under the 'Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav'.

India: Naxal killed in encounter with police in Chhattisgarh

Narayanpur, Jan 24 (PTI) A Naxal was killed in an encounter with security personnel in Chhattisgarh's Narayanpur district on Monday, a senior police official said.

The gunfight took place at around 1.30 am near a bridge in a forest, located about six km from Bharanda police station, when a team of the District Reserve Guard (DRG) was out on a search operation, Narayanpur's Superintendent of Police Girija Shankar Jaiswal said.

After the exchange of fire stopped, the body of a Naxal and a muzzle loading gun were recovered from the spot, he said.

India: Man held with Rs 1.48 crore cash, jewellery

Mangaluru, Jan 24 (PTI) Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel attached to the Mangaluru junction railway station on Sunday detained a man travelling with Rs 1.48 crore in cash and 800 gm of gold ornaments without any valid records on the Mumbai LTT-Ernakulam Duronto express.

The RPF later handed over the man, identified as Mahendra Singh Rao (33), a native of Udaipur in Rajasthan, to the railway police at Mangaluru central, a release from the RPF said here.

India: Sharad Pawar tests positive for coronavirus

Mumbai, Jan 24 (PTI) NCP president Sharad Pawar on Monday said he has tested positive for coronavirus, but there is no cause of worry.

"I have tested Covid positive but there is no cause for concern. I am following the treatment suggested by my doctor," the 81-year-old former Union minister tweeted.

"I request all those who have been in contact with me in the past few days to get themselves tested and take all necessary precautions," added Pawar, whose party shares power with the Shiv Sena and Congress in Maharashtra

India: RBI to conduct overnight VRR auction of Rs 75,000 cr on Monda

Mumbai, Jan 24 (PTI) The Reserve Bank of India on Monday said it will be conducting an overnight variable rate repo auction under liquidity adjustment facility (LAF) for an amount of Rs 75,000 crore today.

The date of reversal is on January 25, 2022, the central bank said in a release.

On January 20, the RBI had conducted an overnight variable rate repo (VRR) auction of Rs 50,000 crore.

India: Kanpur remains on total awareness over virus spread

Kanpur: Concern was raised on the single-day surge of 887 fresh cases in the third wave of Corona spread. One death was reported in the past days.

This comes after demonstrating a substantial dip in the virus cases on Thursday, with only a total of 354 cases.

According to the sources, the active case count of the city now stands at 3671, while the discharges remain at 428. 

On Saturday, Kanpur's witnessed the highest single-day surge of 887 fresh cases, in the third wave.

Families Mourn Indian Victims Of Houthi Strike On UAE

NEW DELHI, Jan 23 (NNN-PTI) – Mourners in India’s northern state of Punjab, yesterday attended the funerals of two compatriots, killed in a recent attack by Houthi rebels on the UAE.

Two Indians and a Pakistani were killed, when the drone and missile strikes hit fuel trucks near Abu Dhabi airport on Monday, causing multiple explosions. Houthi rebels in Yemen claimed the attacks.

The remains of Hardeep Singh, 22, and Hardev Singh, 34, were repatriated to India on Friday.

SRINAGAR, India (AP) — For five years, Sajad Gul wrote about conflict wracking his homeland, a disputed Himalayan territory where a violent armed rebellion and India’s brutal counterinsurgency have raged for over three decades.

That changed on a snowy Wednesday night in January with a knock at his house. Gul was surrounded by Indian soldiers wielding automatic rifles who bundled him into a vehicle and sped away, plowing through the snow-laden track in Hajin, a quiet village about 20 miles from Srinagar, the region’s main city, said his mother, Gulshana, who only uses one name.

India: Denied tickets, U'khand BJP leaders threaten to break ranks

Dehradun, Jan 22 (PTI) Denial of tickets has left powerful contenders in the BJP seething with discontent with several of them either preparing to cross over to other parties or enter the poll arena as independents.

While a number of those left out are sulking as the party has preferred Congress defectors over dedicated party cadres on many seats in its first list of 59 candidates, a few have come out in the open with their wounded feelings.

The most notable of them are the sitting MLA from Tharali Munni Devi Shah and Dwarahat MLA Mahesh Negi.
