India: Congress & BJP eye upon Kanpur seats in 2022 polls

Kanpur: All political parties are active in  making strategies for the upcoming this year's U P Assembly elections. Beyond doubts the Congress party wants to regain its loss under the leadership of the party in charge and General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi, while BJP too wants to repeat it's feat here.

However, factionalism does prevail within the Congress party. The organisation has to bear the brunt because of this factor.

As many as 10 Assembly seats exist in Kanpur. But the Govind Nagar Assembly seat remains in the news.

India's main cities record sharp fall in COVID-19 infections

NEW DELHI, Jan 17 (Reuters) - India's capital Delhi and financial hub Mumbai have reported a big fall in COVID-19 infections in the past two days and most of those who contracted the virus have recovered at home, authorities said on Monday.

Mumbai's daily new infections fell below 10,000 on Sunday for the first time since early this month, after touching an all-time high of 20,971 on Jan. 7. It reported 7,895 infections late on Sunday, Mumbai's municipal corporation said.

India records 258,089 new coronavirus cases, 385 deaths in a day

New Delhi, Jan 17 (PTI) India saw a single-day rise of 258,089 new coronavirus infections taking the tally of cases to 3,73,80,253, which included 8,209 cases of the Omicron variant detected so far, according to data updated by the Union Health Ministry on Monday.

A total of 8,209 cases of the Omicron variant have been detected across 29 states and union territories, out of which 3,109 have recovered or migrated.

India: Fresh charges slapped on Yati Narsinghanand

Dehradun, Jan 17 (PTI) Fresh charges have been slapped on Yati Narsinghanand for abusing a journalist and photographer after being offended by a question they had asked during an interview.

The Dasna temple priest has already been sent to 14 days' judicial custody in the Dharma Sansad hate speech case.

The fresh charges were slapped on the Dasna temple head priest on the basis of a complaint filed by a journalist, Haridwar city police station SHO Rakinder Singh Kathait said.

India: Three held for raping and killing minor girl in MP

Gwalior (MP), Jan 17 (PTI) A 14-year-old girl was allegedly raped and killed by three men, who dumped her body into the Chambal river, in Gwalior district of Madhya Pradesh, police said on Monday.

The three accused included two truck drivers.

The incident had occurred on December 27 last year. Police arrested the three men on Sunday, said Superintendent of Police Amit Sanghi.

He said the victim girl was lured by two truck drivers and a man living in her neighbourhood to accompany them to Farrukhabad in Uttar Pradesh in their vehicle.

India: Uttarakhand Pradesh Mahila Cong president joins BJP

Dehradun, Jan 17 (PTI) In a shot in the arm for the BJP ahead of the upcoming assembly polls in Uttarakhand, Pradesh Mahila Congress president Sarita Arya on Monday joined the saffron party.

The former Nainital MLA joined the BJP at its state headquarters here in the presence of Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, Pradesh party president Madan Kaushik and other leaders.

Arya was keen on a ticket from Nainital constituency but was doubtful about the Congress fielding her.

India: No one can be forced to get vaccinated: Centre to SC

New Delhi, Jan 17 (PTI) COVID-19 inoculation guidelines issued by the Union Health Ministry do not envisage forcible vaccination without obtaining the consent of an individual, the Centre has told the Supreme Court.

The Health Ministry in an affidavit filed before the top court submitted that India's vaccination programme is the largest in the world and as on January 11, 2022, a total of 1,529,543,602 doses have been administered.

India: Shiv Sena will contest 10-15 seats in Goa: Sanjay Raut

Mumbai, Jan 16 (PTI) The Shiv Sena will contest 10-15 seats in the next month's Goa Assembly elections, party leader Sanjay Raut said on Sunday and stressed that the Maharashtra-based outfit will field common men as its nominees.

Responding to a question on whether the Sena will contest the polls in Goa along with the NCP, its alliance partner in the Maharashtra government, Raut said, We will also go. Their (NCP) leaders are coming to Goa.

We will contest 10-15 seats in Goa, he added.

India: Woman ends life over torture by husband, in-laws in Raj

Jaipur, Jan 16 (PTI) A 31-year old woman allegedly hanged herself to death over torture by her husband and in-laws in Ajmer, police said on Sunday.

The incident took place Saturday night, they said.

According to a suicide note left behind by the woman, she was harassed by her husband, who is living in Germany, and his parents staying in Ajmer's Kishangarh area.

India: Ruling BJP's hate politics very harmful for country: Rahul

New Delhi, Jan 16 (PTI) Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Sunday said the BJP's politics of "hatred" is very harmful for the country and is also responsible for unemployment.

The former Congress chief said this a day after he attacked the BJP government by putting out an online quiz

"I also believe that the hate politics of the BJP is very harmful for the country. And this hatred is also responsible for the unemployment," he said in a tweet in Hindi.
