India: Aligarh 'Dharma Sansad' to be held in April

Aligarh (UP), Jan 24 (PTI) The "Dharam Sansad", which was earlier scheduled for January 22 here, will now be held in the first week of April, an organiser said on Monday.

Puja Shakun Pandey, who is the national general secretary of the All-India Hindu Mahasabha, said the decision was taken at a meeting.

"The Dharma Sansad, which was earlier scheduled to be held in Aligarh on January 22, will now be organised in the first week of April. It was postponed due to the Covid pandemic and the state elections," she said.

India: BJP suspends Ritesh Tiwari, Jaiprakash Majumdar in WB

Kolkata, Jan 24 (PTI) BJP Monday suspended its senior West Bengal leaders Ritesh Tiwari and Jaiprakash Majumdar, who were show caused on January 23, for violating the party discipline.

A statement issued by the West Bengal BJP unit said Tiwari and Majumdar have been suspended till the party's disciplinary committee completes its investigation under instructions of BJP state president Sukanta Majumdar.

India: 86 pc Indians want voting to be made compulsory: Survey

New Delhi, Jan 25 (PTI) An overwhelming 86 per cent people want voting to be made mandatory in the country, according to a survey released on Tuesday on the occasion of the 12th National Voters' Day.

The pan-India survey, conducted with a sample size of over four lakh people by location-based social network platform Public App, also found that over 80 per cent of respondents trust the current voting process in the country.

India: Congress leader RPN Singh resigns from party

New Delhi, Jan 25 (PTI) Congress leader and former union minister RPN Singh on Tuesday resigned from the party and is likely to join the BJP.

He announced on Twitter that he was starting his new political journey.

Singh is also the in-charge for Jharkhand affairs of the party, where the party is in power along with the JMM.

"Today, at a time, we are celebrating the formation of our great Republic, I begin a new chapter in my political journey. Jai Hind," Singh said on Twitter.

India: Security forces recover IED planted by CPI(Maoist)

Garhwa, Jan 25 (PTI) An Improvised Explosive Device (IED) planted on a road in Jharkhand's Garhwa district by suspected CPI(Maoist) was recovered by security forces, a senior police officer said on Tuesday.

A joint security team of district armed police and CRPF detected the IED planted on a road in Beheratoli village during a search operation on Monday, Superintendent of Police, Anjani Kumar Jha said.

The IED was defused by the bomb disposal squad, the SP added.

Restrictions were put in place in view of people's health, Kejriwal said after hoisting the national flag at the Delhi government's Republic Day function

"Delhiites have suffered the most due to Covid. We don't want that your livelihood is affected but your health is important, so we had to put restrictions," he said

India: Man enacts high voltage drama atop tower in Kanpur

Kanpur: High drama was seen in Kanpur Dehat for over an hour when a man, stunned with his wife's alleged affair with a local man, climbed the tower with his children and threatened to commit suicide.

This caused chaos ultimately. The police arrived on the spot following information by the local people.

The occurrence occured on Monday near Gandhi Nagar of Akbarpur area. The man threatened to commit suicide after throwing his kids down from an elevation of almost 40-feet.

India: UP elections: SP seeks ban on opinion polls

Lucknow, Jan 23 (PTI) The Samajwadi Party has urged the Election Commission to stop the opinion polls being aired on some news channels with immediate effect.

In a letter to the chief election commissioner, the party claimed that airing of the polls is a violation of model code of conduct and they can misguide the voters and influence the election.
