India: Sonia, Manmohan at Tihar to meet Chidambaram

New Delhi, Sep 23 (PTI) Former prime minister Manmohan Singh and Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Monday visited the Tihar Jail to meet P Chidambaram who has been lodged there in connection with the INX media case, sources said.

Chidambaram has been lodged in the Tihar Jail since September 5.

The two Congress leaders were accompanied by Karti Chidambaram, the former Finance minister's son who is also a Lok Sabha MP, the sources said.

India: Man lynched, two injured over cow slaughter suspicion

Khunti, Sep 23 (PTI) A differently-abled man was killed and two others were seriously injured when a mob allegedly thrashed them on suspicion of slaughtering a cow, in Jharkhand's Khunti district, police said on Monday.

The incident happened after local residents allegedly saw Kalantus Barla, Fagu Kacchap and Phillip Horo with the carcass of a cow near a river at Jaltanga village on Sunday and beat them up, a police officer said.

India: 7-yr-old girl gangraped in Maharashtra

Thane, Sep 23 (PTI) A seven-year-old girl was allegedly raped by three men in a dilapidated building near her school in Maharashtra's Thane district, police said on Monday.

The incident took place last Thursday following which the three accused, who sexually harassed the Class 2 girl on previous occasions also, were arrested, Bazarpeth police station's inspector Yeshwant Chavan said.

The accused, identified as Navin Jasuza (24), Ajay Dehare (34) and Vikram Purohit (19), worked at different shops in Kalyan town here.

India: HM Shah moots idea of multipurpose card

New Delhi, Sept 23 (PTI) Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday mooted the idea of a multipurpose identity card for citizens with all utilities like Aadhaar, passport, driving licence and bank accounts.

Shah also said the Census 2021 data will be collected through mobile app.

The Home Minister said there should also be a system that when a person dies, the information is updated in the population data automatically.

"We can have just one card for all utilities like Aadhaar, passport, bank account, driving licence, voter card. This is a potential," he said.

India: Rape accused BJP leader Chimayanand referred to Lucknow hospital

Shahjahanpur (UP), Sep 23 (PTI) Former Union minister Swami Chinmayanand, arrested in connection with rape charges levelled by a postgraduate student here, was referred to the King George Medical University in Lucknow on Monday morning for treatment, jail sources said.

The doctors have referred the BJP leader to Lucknow for angiography in view of his health condition, the sources said.

His counsel Om Singh said in view of the condition of the BJP leader, the doctors attending on him felt the need of angiography and referred him to KGMU Lucknow.

India: BJP MLA booked for abusing govt official in UP

Ballia (UP), Sep 23 (PTI) A case has been registered against BJP MLA Surendra Singh for allegedly abusing and threatening a government official, police said on Monday.

The action was taken after an official in the state's electricity department had given a written complaint against the controversial MLA from Baria, they said.

A case has been registered on the basis of the complaint and investigations are on, police said, adding further action will be taken on the basis of evidence.

India: Collegium modifies earlier decision for alleviation of Justice Kureshi

New Delhi, Sep 21; GANASHAKTI - The Supreme Court collegium has recommended the alleviation of Justice Akil Kureshi as the chief justice of the Tripura High Court, modifying its earlier decision of sending his name for the post of the chief justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court.

The resolution of the collegium uploaded on the apex court's official website late Friday evening said the modification to recommend Justice Kureshi to the Tripura High Court was taken in the collegium's meeting held on September 5.

India: Babri Masjid demolition case: Special CBI court issues summons to Kalyan Singh

Lucknow, Sep 22 (PTI) A special CBI court here has issued summons to former Uttar Pradesh chief minister and BJP leader Kalyan Singh, directing him to appear before it on September 27 in connection with the Babri Masjid demolition case.

The court is conducting the trial of accused persons, including BJP leaders L K Advani, M M Joshi, Uma Bharti and others for allegedly conspiring to demolish the mosque at the disputed Ram Janmbhoomi-Babri Masjid site in Ayodhya.

India: Maruti to drive in new S-Presso later this month

New Delhi, Sep 21 (PTI) Maruti Suzuki India (MSI) on Saturday said it will launch mini SUV S-Presso later this month, coinciding with the start of the festive season.

The company said the indigenously conceived, designed and developed vehicle is made for India as well as the world.

"Our internal research suggests that the criteria of buying a car for the youth, apart from affordability, acquisition cost and maintenance, now also include design and aesthetics," MSI Executive Director (Marketing & Sales) Shashank Srivastava said in a statement.
