India: Former PMC Bank director arrested

Mumbai, Oct 16 (PTI) The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of Mumbai Police on Wednesday arrested Surjit Singh Arora, one of the former directors of the scam-hit Punjab & Maharashtra Cooperative Bank.

This is the fifth arrest in the case.

Arora was summoned for questioning by the EOW's special investigation team earlier in the day.

India: Ayodhya bench judges to sit in chambers on Thursday

New Delhi, Oct 16 (PTI) A day after concluding the marathon hearing in the politically sensitive Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid title dispute case, the members of the 5-Judge Constitution bench of the Supreme Court will sit "in chambers" on Thursday.

A notice in this regard has been issued by the Supreme Court saying that Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi and four other judges will sit in chambers, where parties involved are not allowed.

India: CJI Ranjan Gogoi cancels foreign visit

New Delhi, Oct 16 (PTI) Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi has reportedly cancelled his foreign visit to attend official programmes, sources said on Wednesday.

The CJI, who headed a bench on Ayodhya land dispute case in which the judgement was reserved, has cancelled his programme for foreign visit due to some exigencies, they said.

Gogoi was to travel to some South American countries, Middle East and some other countries before he demits office as CJI on November 17.

India: Doctor arrested on charges of raping woman

New Delhi, Oct 16 (PTI) A doctor working with a city hospital was arrested after a 27-year-old married woman alleged that he raped her after offering her a drink laced with sedatives at his house in Gautam Nagar, police said on Wednesday.

The doctor was arrested on Saturday after the woman approached police and registered a case, they said.

In her complaint, the woman alleged that he raped her in May this year and since then he blackmailed her with her obscene photographs that he had clicked, a senior police official said.

India: Goa school teacher arrested for molesting five students

Panaji, Oct 17 (PTI) A teacher of a government-run school in Goa was arrested on Thursday for allegedly molesting five girl students, police said.

The arrest was made after the five students of the school, located in Ponda town of South Goa district, complained to the authorities against the teacher, Manoj Phadte, Superintendent of Police Arvind Gawas told reporters.

India: US woman molested by bike taxi driver in UP

Lucknow, Oct 17 (PTI) A 27-year-old woman from the US was allegedly molested by a bike taxi driver in Lucknow's Hazratganj area, police said on Thursday.

The woman, who is on a one-year visa, was on her way to work when she was sexually harassed by bike taxi driver Vijay Kumar, Hazratganj Circle Officer Abhay Kumar Mishra told PTI.

She had booked the bike taxi from Sikandar Bagh to New Hyderabad here when Kumar (28) touched her inappropriately and indulged in sleazy talk, the circle officer said, adding that the driver was later arrested.

India: UPPCB tests air pollution level in city's localities

Kanpur: In view of the increasing level of air pollution the district administration has decided to confirm the causes and the exact condition of the air pollution in different localities. 

The District Magistrate Vijay V Pant has asked the Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board regional officer to conduct a test of the air pollution level in prominent localities.

For this purpose, he suggested bringing in use installed pollution measuring gadgets under the Smart City project.

India slips to 102 on Global Hunger Index of 117 countries

14 Oct 2019; (UMM): India has slipped to 102 in the Global Hunger Index (GHI) in 2019, from 93rd rank in 2015, the website that tracks hunger and malnutrition said on Wednesday. Pakistan, on the other hand, has improved its ranking from 106 in 2015 to 94 in 2019, while Sri Lanka has gone up from 82 to 66.

Countries like Yemen and Djibouti, which are conflict ridden and facing severe climate issues respectively, fared better than India.

India: Congress leader shot dead in UP's Aligarh

Aligarh (UP), Oct 16 (PTI) A local Congress leader has been shot dead in Uttar Pradesh's Aligarh district over an alleged property dispute, police said on Wednesday.

The men, who are yet to be identified, reached Mohamed Farouk's office near Shamshad market under Civil Lines police station limits on two motorcycles around 8 pm on Tuesday, said Superintendent of Police (City) Abhishek Kumar.

The attackers then barged into the office and fired several shots at Farouk, he said.

India: UP govt cancels leave of officials till Nov 30

Lucknow, Oct 16 (PTI) The Uttar Pradesh government has cancelled leave of all officials posted on field duty in the state till November 30.

An official order issued here Wednesday attributed the decision to the coming festival season.

Incidently, the order was issued on a date that coincided with the last day of hearing on the vexed Ayodhya dispute case in the Supreme Court.
