India: BJP minister calls Abhijit Banerjee Left-leaning

Pune, Oct 18 (PTI) Union minister Piyush Goyal on Friday dubbed Indian-American Abhijit Banerjee, who won the 2019 Nobel for Economics, as Left-leaning.

Patel made the remarks at a media briefing here.

"I congratulate Abhijit Banerjee for winning the Nobel prize. You all know that his thinking is totally Left-leaning," Goyal said.

Border Guard Bangladesh action killing BSF jawan unprovoked

New Delhi/Kolkata, Oct 18 (PTI) The BSF on Friday said the Bangladeshi action of killing their trooper and injuring another along the border in West Bengal was unprovoked and that its troops did not fire "a single bullet" when a flag meeting took place between the two sides.

A senior official rejected the claim made by the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) that its patrol team "had to open fire in self-defence amid gunfire by BSF men".

India: CJI Gogoi recommends Justice S A Bobde as his successor

New Delhi, Oct 18 (PTI) Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi on Friday sent a letter to the Centre recommending Justice S A Bobde, who is next in seniority, as his successor.

Official Sources told PTI that Justice Gogoi wrote a letter to the Ministry of Law and Justice recommending Justice Bobde to be the next chief justice.

Justice Gogoi, who was sworn in as the 46th Chief Justice of India on October 3, 2018, will demit office on November 17.

India: Poor roads cause casualties, need repairing

Kanpur: Despite tough traffic rules the road accidents are not going downwards. Deaths and injury cases are increasing day by day. If we look at the figures of deaths from the year 2015 to 2019 it gives us a clear rising trend. The number of deaths was 468 in the year 2015 which increased to 531 in the year 2019.

Various reasons were given for deaths occurring on the roads. Potholes, stunts and negligence towards the traffic rules are normally defined for death cases on the road. 

India: Orders to JNUSU to vacate office an attempt to 'suppress' elected student body

New Delhi, Oct 17; GANASHAKTI: Accusing the Jawaharlal Nehru University of targeting students, the CPI(M) on Thursday said that asking the students' union to vacate their offices in the varsity premises was an attempt to "suppress" the newly-elected body.

The CPI(M) politburo alleged that under the present government all central educational institutions were subject to "regimentation" and academic freedom and democratic rights under "assault".

Kolkata; GANASHAKTI: Nobel laureate Abhijit Banerjee on Wednesday said the Indian banking sector is facing a huge, deep-rooted crisis that requires immediate attention.

Speaking in context of scam-hit PMC Bank and the emerging problems in the banking sector, Banerjee, who won the Nobel Prize in Economics this year along with two others, said this problem could be used as an opportunity to sell off country’s ailing banks.

India: Body of journalist found in forests of Uttarakhand

Pauri, Oct 17 (PTI) The body of a 43-year-old journalist was found in the forests of Dugadda range here on Thursday morning, officials said.

Prima facie, it appears to be a case of suicide, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) unit incharge Inspector Gabar Singh Negi said.

The body of Pankaj Sharma was found in Lansdowne forest division at a distance of 250 metres from the national highway, he said.

Kashmir: SC asks JK admin to place before it orders imposing restrictions

New Delhi, Oct 16 (PTI) The Supreme Court on Wednesday asked the Jammu and Kashmir administration to place before it the administrative orders imposing communication and other restrictions in the state following the abrogation of provisions of Article 370.

A bench headed by Justice N V Ramana questioned Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the administration, as to why the administrative orders have not been filed yet in the court.

Kashmir: Sister and daughter of Farooq Abdullah released

Srinagar, Oct 16 (PTI) Women protestors, including National Conference President Farooq Abdullah's sister and daughter, who were arrested on Tuesday after they took out a protest march, were released on bail by a court here this evening, officials said.

Abdullah's sister Suraiya, his daughter Safiya and 11 other women furnished a personal bond of Rs 10,000 and surety of Rs 40,000 each under section 107 of criminal procedure code, giving an assurance that they would maintain peace, the officials said.

India: No interim relief for cop accused of raping Uzbek woman

Mumbai, Oct 16 (PTI) A court here on Wednesday refused to provide interim protection from arrest to a police officer who is accused of raping a 35-year-old Uzbekistan national for eight years.

Police inspector Bhanudas alias Anil Jadhav, who has been suspended, has filed an anticipatory or pre-arrest bail application before sessions Judge K S Hore.
