Kanpur: Though the work on the metro project continues in the city, the obstacle comes owing to changing soil condition on the route selected for raising the pillars. The engineers find the soil different at places here. They do not find the same kind of soil in comparison to Lucknow. Therefore, the piling for the pillar gets impeded due to this persisting problem.

Indian students decry police as citizenship protests grow

NEW DELHI (AP) — Students involved in a massive weekend protest at a predominantly Muslim university in India’s capital described a clash with baton-wielding police at a news conference Tuesday, as opposition grew nationwide against a new law that provides a path to citizenship for non-Muslim migrants.

India: Not only onion, prices of potato and other veggies on rise

New Delhi, Dec 16 (PTI) Not just onion, retail prices of potato and other vegetables have also shot up in the national capital on Monday as recent winter rainfall has damaged some of the crops, according to traders.

At the Azadpur wholesale mandi here, prices of main vegetables, especially onion, are ruling high in the range of Rs 70-90/kg, potato at Rs 22/kg, tomato at Rs 18/kg.

India: Citizenship Act, NRC weapons of mass polarisation: Rahul Gandhi

New Delhi, Dec 16 (PTI) Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Monday termed the Citizenship Amendment Act and the National Register of Citizens as "weapons of mass polarisation" unleashed by fascists on India and said the best defence against them is peaceful satyagraha.

Gandhi said he stands in solidarity with those protesting peacefully against them.

India: Congress' dharna in solidarity with students

New Delhi, Dec 16 (PTI) Congress leaders led by party general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra held a dharna at the India Gate on Monday in solidarity with students protesting against the amended Citizenship Act.

Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala said the two-hour protest, which began at 4 pm, is to express solidarity with students from Jamia Millia Islamia University and other places.

Police had used force against students on Sunday after a protest against the amended law turned violent in which buses were torched.

India: Atmosphere in country bad: Priyanka

New Delhi, Dec 16 (PTI) Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra said on Monday that the atmosphere in the country has become "bad", as she cited Delhi Police' action against Jamia university students to hit out at the Union government.

"The country's atmosphere is bad. Police is entering university to beat up (students). The government has tinkered with the Constitution. We will fight for the Constitution," she said.

Her remarks came amid protests in different parts of the country against the amended Citizenship Act.

India: Woman kills daughter-in-law

Palghar, Dec 15 (PTI) A 48-year-old woman allegedly killed her daughter-in-law by smashing her head with a flower pot while she was asleep at their residence at Vasai in the district early on Sunday, an official said.

The accused, Anandi Mane, a resident of Manickpur in Vasai, later surrendered before the police and was subsequently arrested, the official said.

India: Protest march held in Raipur against CAA, NRC

Raipur, Dec 15 (PTI) A protest march was taken out in Chhattisgarh capital Raipur against the "divisive" amended citizenship law which grants Indian citizenship to non-Muslim migrants fleeing religious persecution from Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan.

The protest was held under the banner of the "Anti-CAB Agitation Forum" from Marine Drive area to Ambedkar Chowk in evening, said Gautam Bandopadhyay, an activist.
