India: Different soil quality impedes metro work

Kanpur: Though the work on the metro project continues in the city, the obstacle comes owing to changing soil condition on the route selected for raising the pillars. The engineers find the soil different at places here. They do not find the same kind of soil in comparison to Lucknow. Therefore, the piling for the pillar gets impeded due to this persisting problem.

Work on two sites for piling and the pillar construction in the first phase has been completed. Pile design remains entirely based on soil quality. Comparing the soil quality of Lucknow, one senior officer told the problem was not so confusing there as that of this business city.

The UP Metro Rail Corporation has brought in use two machines for the work. The map given by other civic bodies does not show exact drawing. Now the MRC digs a two-metre deep trench to check the water or cable or CUGL lines. The first phase of the metro project covers IIT to Moti Jheel.
