India: Murmu takes oath as 15th President

New Delhi, Jul 25 (PTI) Droupadi Murmu on Monday took oath as the 15th President of India.

Chief Justice of India N V Ramana administered her oath at a ceremony held at Parliament's Central Hall in the presence of former president Ram Nath Kovind, Vice President and Rajya Sabha Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi amongst others.

She took the oath in the name of god in Hindi.

Patna, July 25 (PTI) Upendra Kushwaha, a top leader of Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's JD(U), on Monday squarely blamed ally BJP for the perception gaining ground that all was not well in the NDA in the state.

The JD(U) parliamentary board chief also slammed state BJP chief Sanjay Jaiswal for having recently claimed that Bihar was fast becoming a hub of anti-national terror activities.

India’s central bank using huge reserves to support rupee

NEW DELHI, July 22 (NNN-Bernama) — India’s central bank is using its vast foreign exchange reserves accumulated over the years to prop up the rupee.

The Indian currency has hit record lows against the US dollar in recent days, prompting the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to supply extra dollars.

RBI governor Shaktikanta Das said on Friday the rupee’s movements have been relatively smooth and orderly due to the central bank’s actions, including measures to encourage inflows.

Ethnic minority woman wins India’s presidential election

NEW DELHI (AP) — A woman who hails from a minority ethnic community was chosen Thursday as India’s new president, a largely ceremonial position.

Droupadi Murmu, a leader from India’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party, was elected by the Indian Parliament and state legislatures in voting held Monday, making her the first president from one of the country’s tribes and the second-ever woman to hold the position.

She will be formally sworn in as the president on Monday.

India: Deranged person halts train by locking himself into parcel van

Kanpur: The mentally challenged youth locked the parcel vehicle door of the New Delhi-bound Swarna Shatabdi Express. It stood for one hour and five minutes at Kanpur Central station.

The mentally challenged youth locked the parcel vehicle door and did not easily come out. During this, the passengers created a ruckus.

Later, the GRP and railway personnel cut the gate and brought down the mentally deranged youth.

The Swarna Shatabdi Express going to New Delhi via Kanpur via Lucknow had arrived at Kanpur Central station on its scheduled time on Monday.

Second Indian Aircraft Made Emergency Landing In 24 Hours

NEW DELHI, Jul 18 (NNN-PTI) – Another Indian aircraft made an emergency landing in a foreign country, over the past 24 hours, media reported yesterday.

An Air India Express flight, from India’s southern city of Calicut to the United Arab Emirates’ (UAE) Dubai, was diverted to Oman’s capital, Muscat, after a burning smell emerged in the cabin.

Post-landing engineering inspections were carried out on the aircraft and the engines, but no fumes or smoke were observed and the flight took off for its onward journey to Dubai, the reports said.
