UAE strikes deal with China to buy fighter jets

25 Feb 2022; MEMO: With growing fears of a new cold war between the West and Russia and China, the UAE has announced that it is on the verge of completing a deal with Beijing to purchase 12 of its L15 aircraft with the option for 36 additional aircraft of the same type in the future.

Tareq Abdulraheem Al Hosani, chief executive officer of Tawazun Economic Council, said the deal comes as part of the ongoing efforts to diversify and modernise capabilities of the Air Force and the Armed Forces units in general.

Emirates warns Airbus over A350 deliveries amid paint problems

25 Feb 2022; MEMO: Dubai's Emirates has told Airbus AIR.PA it will not take delivery of A350 passenger jets that it has ordered if they have surface problems similar to those reported by Qatar Airways, the Airline's President was quoted as saying, and Reuters reports.

"We made it absolutely clear in Toulouse now, that if we have the same problem on one of our aircraft, we won't take them over," Tim Clark told industry publication AirlineRatings.

Dubai Expo says remains open to all nations after Russian invasion of Ukraine

DUBAI, Feb 25 (Reuters) - Expo 2020 Dubai on Friday said the major international cultural and business event hosted by the United Arab Emirates remains open to all countries following Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Russia, which has a prominent pavilion at the six-month world fair that ends on March 31, has been stripped of hosting and participating in major events since it launched the invasion.

Paralysed banking system pushing Afghanistan towards collapse -Red Cross

DUBAI, Feb 25 (Reuters) - Afghanistan is inching closer towards economic collapse six months after the Taliban seized power, the Red Cross said on Friday, with a paralysed banking system stymieing international efforts to get financial aid into the war-ravaged country.

Organisations such as the Red Cross have been forced to rely on informal money exchanges to move cash in to pay the salaries of some workers, although most of Afghanistan's estimated 500,000 state employees have now worked without pay for months.

Israel Diamond Exchange opens office in Dubai

24 Feb 2022; MEMO: Israel Diamond Exchange (IDE) opened a representative office at Dubai Diamond Exchange (DDE) in Almas Tower, Dubai Multi Commodities Centre (DMCC) announced yesterday.

According to Emirates official news agency WAM, senior representatives and government officials from DMCC, World Federation of Diamond Bourses (WFDB), IDE and the Israeli Consulate in Dubai attended the inauguration of the IDE office.

FM visits Pakistan, Saudi & China pavilions at Dubai Expo 2020

DUBAI, Feb 17 (APP): Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi on Thursday visited the Pakistani pavilion at Dubai Expo 2020 and appreciated the unique design and efforts of the organizers.

Pakistan’s Ambassador to the UAE Afzal Mahmood, Consul General of Pakistan in Dubai Hassan Afzal Khan and Director of Pavilion Rizwan Tariq received the foreign minister.

The Director Pavilion gave a detailed briefing to the Foreign Minister on the design and features of the Pakistani Pavilion.

Kenya is safe and open for business, President Kenyatta assures investors

DUBAI (UAE), Feb 17 (NNN-KBC) — Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta has assured global investors that Kenya is open and safe for business saying there is political and economic stability ahead of the 2022 elections.

Speaking when he launched celebrations to mark the Kenya National Day at the Expo 2020 Dubai, Kenyatta said his administration has put in place a legal framework for investment that provides adequate investor protection in line with most international standards including safeguards for property rights.

UAE: Emirates flight to Washington flew too low on take-off, investigators say

DUBAI, Feb 17 (Reuters) - An Emirates flight to Washington in December flew too low as it took off from Dubai International Airport and over an adjacent inner-city neighbourhood, investigators said on Thursday.

There were no injuries to the 372 passengers and crew onboard or damage to the plane in the Dec. 19 incident, which investigators determined as serious in a preliminary report.

The flight landed in Washington uneventfully, it said.

Group alleges US firm’s tanker illicitly traded Iran oil

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — A tanker owned by a Los Angeles-based private equity firm likely took part in the illicit trade of Iranian crude oil at sea despite American sanctions targeting the Islamic Republic amid the collapse of its nuclear deal with world powers, an advocacy group alleges. The firm said Thursday it is cooperating with U.S. government investigators.
