India: Ex Cong Mayor named accused in Bengaluru violence case

Bengaluru, Oct 13 (PTI) The Central Crime Branch, probing the violence here over an 'inflammatory' social media post, has named former Mayor and sitting Congress corporator R Sampath Raj as one of the accused in the case, police said on Tuesday.

"He (Sampath Raj) has been named as one of the accused in the DJ halli and KG halli violence," a top police officer investigating the case told PTI.

According to the official, he was amongst those who had information about the violence and did not share it with the police.

India: Catholic union calls for Father Stan's release arrested by NIA

Mangaluru, Oct 10 (PTI): The All India Catholic Union (AICU) on Saturday called for the immediate release of 83- year-old Jesuit priest Fr Stan Swamy, who was arrested from Ranchi, Jharkhand, in an operation by the NIA and now in judicial custody.

The century-old AICU, which represents 1.6 crore ordinary catholics in the country, expressed apprehension over the arrest of Stan by saying that the action on the ailing activist was a plan to silence dissent and protest against alienation of the natural and forest resources of the tribals.

India: Union Minister Pralhad Joshi tests COVID positive

Bengaluru, Oct 7 (PTI) Union Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, Coal and Mines Pralhad Joshi on Wednesday said he has tested positive for COVID-19 and was under home quarantine.

"I have tested positive for #COVID19 .

As I am asymptomatic, as per doctor's advice I am in home quarantine," he tweeted.

Joshi, an MP from Dharwad Lok Sabha constituency, played a crucial role in the conduct of the recent Parliament session amid the pandemic in his capacity as the Parliamentary Affairs Minister.

India: CBI carries out searches at multiple premises of Cong leader DK Sivakumar

New Delhi, Oct 5 (PTI) The CBI is carrying out searches at 14 locations in Karnataka and Maharashtra at the premises of Congress leader D K Shivakumar in an alleged corruption case, officials said on Monday.

The agency has registered a fresh case against the Congress leader based on a source information, they said.

India: HAL rolls out 300th ALH (Dhruv)

Bengaluru, Sep 29 (PTI) The 300th Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH-Dhruv) was rolled out from Hindustan Aeronautics Limited's hangar here on Tuesday.

Speaking on the occasion, HAL CMD, R Madhavan said ALH never looked back from the day when the prototype took its maiden flight on August 30, 1992 and has "evolved into a world class helicopter with its unparalleled performance".

India: Farmers in Karnataka protest "anti-farmer" policies

Bengaluru, Sept 25 (PTI) Farmers in Karnataka staged demonstrations across the state on Friday as part of a 'bandh' call given to protest the 'anti-farmer' policies of the central and state governments.

A large number of ryots from various parts of the state flocked to the state capital to take part in the demonstrations to register their protest against the amendments to the Agricultural Produce Marketing Committee Act and the Karnataka Land Reforms Act.

India: Karnataka Deputy CM tests positive for COVID-19

Bengaluru, Sept 22 (PTI) Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister Govind M Karjol on Tuesday said he has tested positive for coronavirus.

"The COVID-19 test has confirmed me to be positive and I have been hospitalised on the advice of a doctor even though I had no symptoms," Karjol, who holds the portfolio of public works department and social welfare, tweeted, soon after attending the assembly proceedings.

He appealed to those who had come in contact with him to exercise caution,undergo tests and get themselves quarantined.

India: Karnataka to borrow Rs 33,000 cr for development works

Bengaluru, Sept 15 (PTI) The Karnataka government on Tuesday decided to borrow Rs 33,000 crore to cope with the revenue loss owing to COVID-19 pandemic situation and take up development works, Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister J C Madhuswamy said.

The state cabinet meeting decided to amend the Fiscal Responsibility Act to increase its borrowing limit from three per cent to the five per cent of the GSDP, utilising the provision proposed by the Centre, he said.

India: Two more Karnataka ministers test positive for COVID-19

Bengaluru, Sept 16 (PTI) Two more Karnataka Ministers--Basavaraj Bommai and K Gopalaiah-- in the Yediyurappa cabinet have tested positive for coronavirus.

Home Minister Bommai on Wednesday tweeted that he has contracted the virus.

"Our domestic help at home was found infected by the coronavirus yesterday. So, I too underwent a test and found positive for the virus," he said.

Bommai said he was asymptomatic and healthy but as a precautionary measure he has isolated himself at home.

India: What is there to celebrate 'Hindi Diwas' for non-Hindi

Bengaluru, Sep 14 (PTI) Terming 'Hindi Diwas' celebration as an "underhand method" to impose the language on people speaking other languages, JD(S) leader H D Kumaraswamy on Monday demanded its cancellation.

In a series of tweets on a day on which Hindi Diwas is celebrated, the former Chief Minister warned against "imposition" of the language, and said the cordial nature of Kannadigas should not be construed as their weakness.
