India: "Pro Pak" slogans: innocent people arrested, says SDPI

Mangaluru, Jan 1 (PTI) The Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) on Friday alleged that police had arrested innocent people on the charges of raising pro-Pakistan slogans during the gram panchayat vote counting process at Ujire in Dakshina Kannada district on December 30.

SDPI state secretary Ashraf Machar told reporters here that three party workers had been arrested at midnight without any evidence and accused of raising pro-Pakistan slogans.

India: Karnataka cabinet okays anti-cow slaughter ordinance

Bengaluru, Dec 28 (PTI) The Karnataka cabinet on Monday decided to promulgate an ordinance to give effect to the contentious anti-cow slaughter bill that is yet to be approved by the legislative council.

Once it comes into effect, there will be a blanket prohibition of slaughter of cows in the state.

However, slaughter houses will continue to function and beef consumption will not be prohibited with respect to buffalo meat.

"The anti-cow slaughter law is not new. We have had it for decades.

India: BJP, JD(S) dismiss reports about merger

Bengaluru, Dec 20 (PTI) The BJP and JD(S) in Karnataka on Sunday dismissed reports of their merger after a saffron party leader opined that political polarisation was likely in the state, giving rise to speculations about the parties coming together.

Both Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa and JD(S) leader H D Kumaraswamy termed media reports in this regard as 'imaginary'.

"I have a feeling that the political polarisation will intensify in the coming days in the country... The Modi wave and the BJP wave is clearly visible..

India: 13 BJP legislators given Cabinet rank in Karnataka

Bengaluru, Dec 16 (PTI) Thirteen BJP legislators in Karnataka, appointed as the heads of various boards and corporations, were on Wednesday given the Cabinet rank.

According to official notifications, four other legislators have been given the Minister of State rank.

The move has come amid the delay in the expansion or reshuffle of the Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa's cabinet.

According to party sources, this is also being seen as a signal to these legislators that they may not make it to the ministry and an attempt to placate them.

India: Minister calls for peaceful bandh; security tightened

Bengaluru, Dec 7 (PTI): Security arrangements have been made across Karnataka in the wake of 'Bharat Bandh' called for by farmers tomorrow against new agri-marketing laws, Home Minister of the state Basavaraj Bommai on Monday said.

While seeking the cooperation of the organisers of the bandh to maintain peace on the day, the Minister said, "Necessary bandobast has been made by police in Bengaluru city and all districts for tomorrow's protest."

She belongs to the family of K Suryanarayana Adiga, founder of the erstwhile undivided Dakshina Kannada districts private sector Karnataka Bank Limited, and Aravind Adiga, who won theMan Booker prize in 2008.

Mala Adiga is the niece of Nirmala Upadhya who is her fathers elder sister.

India: Cow slaughter ban will be a reality in Karnataka soon: BJP leader

Bengaluru, Nov 20 (PTI) Cow slaughter ban would be a reality in Karnataka in the near future, the BJP national general secretary C T Ravi said on Friday.

The former Karnataka Minister, who is in-charge of party affairs in Maharashtra, Goa and poll-bound Tamil Nadu, said a law banning cow slaughter would be passed in the upcoming Assembly session.

India: Karnataka to enact law banning religious conversions for marriage, says Minister

Bengaluru, Nov 3 (PTI) Karnataka Tourism Minister and BJP national general secretary C T Ravi on Tuesday said a law banning religious conversions for the sake of marriage will be enacted in the state.

He said the government will not remain silent when 'Jihadis' strip the dignity of women in the state.

The statement comes days after the Allahabad High Court held that conversion of religion for the purpose of marriage was illegal.

India: Man goes on stabbing spree, kills one, injures six

Bengaluru, Oct 18 (PTI) A 30-year-old labourer went on a stabbing spree, killing a person and injuring six others, before being overpowered by police personnel here on Sunday, police said.

Ganesh went to a butcher's shop at Cottonpet area to purchase meat, stole a knife from there, ran away and stabbed six people at random.

One of those injured, also a labourer, succumbed to injuries in a hospital. Another was critically injured and was in the Intensive Care Unit, police said.

India: Flood situation remains grim in Karnataka

Bengaluru, Oct 16 (PTI) The flood situation in many parts of Karnataka remained grim on Friday as well due to torrential rains and release of water from the major dams in the state.

North Karnataka remained the worst affected as this was the third time floods hit the region in the last three months.

Belagavi, Kalaburagi, Raichur, Yadgir, Koppal, Gadag, Dharwad, Bagalkote, Vijayapura and Haveri were the worst hit.

An overflowing river Bhima wreaked havoc in Kalaburagi and Yadgir districts inundating many villages and destroying standing crops.
