India: 2 awarded life term for raping minor girl in Jharkhand

Ramgarh (Jharkhand), Oct 23 (PTI) A court in Jharkhand's Ramgarh district on Saturday sentenced two persons to life imprisonment for raping a minor girl in 2019.

Radha Krishna, Additional District Judge-1, Ramgarh, awarded the punishment to the two men under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

The court also slapped a fine of Rs 80,000 on each of them, and in default of payment, they will undergo three years of additional imprisonment.

India: Man arrested for setting wife on fire for dowry

Godda, Sep 26 (PTI) A man was arrested in Jharkhand's Godda district for allegedly setting his wife on fire for dowry, police said.

Rajesh Paswan of Kusumara village was arrested on Saturday as a case was lodged against him and his parents at Mufassil police station after his wife Soni Devi died of burn injuries, they said.

Soni Devi, mother of three children, was first tied with a rope by her husband and mother-in-law and then set on fire by sprinkling kerosene on September 16, police said.

India: Jharkhand BJP leader shot dead

Ranchi, Sep 22 (PTI) A BJP leader was shot dead in Jharkhand's Ranchi district on Wednesday, police said.

Jeetram Munda, the party's Scheduled Tribe Morcha president of Ranchi Rural district, was shot dead by unidentified motorcycle-borne assailants while he was coming out of a roadside eatery in Ormanjhi police station area in the evening, an officer said.

The 35-year-old BJP leader was rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him dead, he said, adding that a manhunt has been launched to nab the accused people.

India: Dalit girl gangraped in Jharkhand, 3 arrested

Hazaribag (Jharkhand), Sep 21 (PTI) A 16-year-old Dalit girl has been allegedly gangraped in Jharkhand's Hazaribag district, police said on Tuesday.

Superintendent of Police Manoj Ratan Chouthe said that three of the five accused have been arrested and a manhunt has been launched to nab the remaining two.

The incident took place in a village in Daroo police station area on Sunday night when the survivor, a student, and her two friends went near a pond to relieve themselves, the officer said.

India: Woman axed to death by mother-in-law

Jamshedpur, Sep 13 (PTI) A 22-year-old woman was axed to death allegedly by her mother-in-law in Jharkhand's Seraikela-Kharswan district, police said on Monday.

The victim Bhawani Layek had an altercation with her mother-in-law Gita Layek over a petty domestic issue on Sunday, which turned serious and the accused picked an axe and hit Bhawani in a fit of rage, a police officer said,

Bhawani was rushed to a nearby hospital but was declared brought dead, he said.

India: 50 IEDs planted by Maoists defused in Jharkhand

Seraikela (Jharkhand), Sep 10 (PTI) As many as 50 Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) suspectedly planted by members of the banned CPI (Maoist) outfit were defused in Jharkhand's Seraikela-Kharswan district on Friday, police said.

Twenty-five IEDs were detected on a road between Nimdih-Panduburu and Kudahatu villages on Thursday evening, and 25 explosives were found on a road between Rugudih and Dodarda villages during the day, Superintendent of Police Anand Prakash said.

India: VHP leader shot at in Jharkhand

Jamshedpur(Jharkhand), Sep 9 (PTI) A local Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) leader was shot at by miscreants near the railway running room under Bagbera police station near here on Thursday, police said.

East Singhbhum, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Dr M Tamil Varnan said a person named Bablu Kumar Singh was shot at by two persons.

VHP Secretary of Jamshedpur Mahanagar Committee, Deepak Verma said that Singh is the VHP Bagbera committee president.

India: PIL filed in HC over namaz room in Jharkhand assembly

Ranchi, Sep 7 (PTI) A public interest litigation (PIL) was filed in the High Court of Jharkhand on Tuesday challenging the order of the Speaker allotting a room in the state assembly for offering namaz, claiming that it has set a wrong precedence.

Alleging that the act is unconstitutional, the petitioner questioned if such an allotment can be done on a building constructed with tax payer's money.

The assembly building is a temple of democracy and not a personal property of anyone, petitioner Bhairav Singh submitted.

Simdega (Jharkhand), Sep 8 (PTI) Two persons have been sentenced to life by a court here for raping a minor girl in 2018.

The District and Session Judge delivered the judgement against Dukhan Gwala and Inder Gwala, residents of Tabhadih under Sadar Police Station of the district.

The court also slapped a fine of Rs 55,000 each on the convicts.

According to the FIR, the accused approached the minor on some pretext, took her to a nearby paddy field at knife point and raped her.

India: Ruckus by BJP in Jharkhand assembly over namaz room

Ranchi, Sep 6 (PTI) Ruckus by the opposition BJP over allotment of a room for offering namaz in Jharkhand assembly disrupted proceedings on Monday.

Before the session began for the day, BJP MLAs sat on the stairs at the entrance of the assembly chanting Hanuman Chalisa and 'Hare Rama' with placards.

As soon as the proceedings for the day began, the BJP members trooped into the Well chanting 'Jai Shri Ram'.
