India: UP cop taken into custody after girl alleges molestation

Mau (UP), Feb 24 (PTI) An Uttar Pradesh police jawan has been taken into custody for allegedly molesting a girl in Mau district, police said on Monday.

According to Superintendent of Police Anurag Arya, a student of Class VI has alleged that the jawan, who stay in the neighbourhood, had gone to buy some items from a nearby shop in Sarailakhansi when she was molested.

Protests in Bhopal, Indore against Trump's visit

Bhopal/Indore, Feb 24 (PTI) Organisations representing the 1984 gas tragedy survivors on Monday staged a protest in Bhopal against the visit of US President Donald Trump claiming his dispensation was not extending help in the ongoing trial into what has been widely acknowledged as the world's worst industrial disaster.

Rachna Dhingra of the Bhopal Group for Information and Action said protesters at Bhopal's Iqbal Maidan registered their anger at the US government not serving summons issued by a court in MP's capital city to Dow Chemicals, an American multi-national company.

India: Sonia condemns Delhi violence, appeals for peace

New Delhi, Feb 24 (PTI) Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Monday appealed to the people of Delhi to maintain communal harmony and defeat "ill-intentioned" forces that seek to divide the country on the basis of religion.

Expressing deep condolences over the death of head constable Rattan Lal, Gandhi also expressed solidarity with his family.

"There can be no space for violence in the land of Mahatma Gandhi, nor can there be any place in the country for forces that seek to impose their communal and divisive ideology on the people," the Congress leader said in a statement.

India: Ex-BJP MLA Narendra Mehta resigns from party

Thane, Feb 25 (PTI) Former BJP MLA Narendra Mehta, who was defeated in the last year's Maharashtra Assembly polls from the Mira-Bhayander constituency here by rival Geeta Jain, has resigned from all party posts.

In a video message shared on social media on Monday, Mehta said he was taking political "sanyas" (retirement), but would continue doing his social works.

India: Doctor booked for raping woman in Maha

Thane, Feb 25 (PTI) An offence has been registered against a doctor for allegedly raping a 23-year-old woman at Bhiwandi town in Maharashtra's Thane district, police said on Tuesday.

The incident took place on February 15 when Ramkunwar Singh, a Kalyan-based doctor, took the victim to show a flat in Bhiwandi and allegedly raped her there, assistant police inspector Deepak Bhoi said.

New Delhi, Feb 25 (PTI) The death toll rose to nine on Tuesday in the violence over the amended citizenship law that has rocked northeast Delhi, GTB Hospital authorities said.

Four people were declared brought dead by doctors at the hospital on Tuesday, they said.

India: Kolkata Police grants permission for Amit Shah rally

Kolkata, Feb 25 (PTI) After days of "dilly-dallying" over granting permission for Union Home Minister Amit Shah's proposed rally here on March 1, the Kolkata Police has finally accorded it, a senior BJP leader said on Tuesday.

The saffron party had on February 20 submitted a letter to the Kolkata Police seeking permission for the rally, he said.

India: No progress in 2008 Malegaon blast trial: HC

Mumbai, Feb 25 (PTI) In a trenchant observation, the Bombay High Court said on Tuesday that there has not been any "effective progress" in the trial of 2008 Malegaon blast case where BJP MP Pragya Singh Thakur is an accused.

The HC also asked the National Investigation Agency (NIA) to explain the delay.
