India: Terrorist Vikas Dubey encounter: SC to hear pleas on July 20

New Delhi, Jul 14 (PTI) The Uttar Pradesh government told the Supreme Court Tuesday it would file a status report detailing the steps taken by the authorities on encounter killings of gangster Vikas Dubey and his associates.

A bench headed by Chief Justice S A Bobde said it may consider appointing a committee headed by a former judge to probe the encounters of Dubey and his aides as also the killing of eight Uttar Pradesh policemen by the gangster.

India: Single-day spike of 29,429 COVID-19 cases

New Delhi, July 15(PTI) India registered a record single-day jump of 29,429 COVID-19 cases pushing its tally to 9,36,181 on Wednesday, while the death toll climbed to 24,309 with 582 new fatalities, according to the Union Health Ministry data.

The number of recoveries stands at 5,92,031, while there are 3,19,840 active cases of coronavirus infection presently in the country, the updated data at 8 am showed.

"Thus, around 63.24 per cent of patients have recovered so far," an official said. The total number of confirmed cases include foreigners.

India: Jitendra Singh, Ram Madhav in self-quarantine

New Delhi, Jul 14 (PTI) Union minister Jitendra Singh and BJP general secretary Ram Madhav have gone into self-quarantine after party's Jammu and Kashmir unit president Ravinder Raina, who had accompanied them to the residence of a slain party leader, tested positive for coronavirus on Tuesday.

Singh, who is also a party MP from Udhampur, said he has gone into self-quarantine.

India: AP CM announces Rs 15k for last rites of COVID victims

Amaravati, Jul 14 (PTI) Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy on Tuesday announced Rs 15,000 for the final rites of those who died of COVID-19, a decision taken after the Opposition TDP criticised the government for alleged inhuman handling of bodies of coronavirus victims.

The Chief Minister also warned that the government would take strict action against COVID hospitals if they were found denying medical treatment to patients.

India: Newborn baby girl found buried alive in Maharashtra

Mumbai, Jul 14 (PTI) In a shocking incident, a newborn baby girl was found buried near a house in Nanded district of Maharashtra, police said.

Aurangabad MP Imtiaz Jaleel, who shared the video of the newborn being dug out by a villager, said he had spoken to Nanded SP and sought a thorough probe in the matter.

"If we are really serious about protecting the girl child, there should be exemplary punishment for the accused," the Lok Sabha member said.

India: Congress suspends Sanjay Jha in Maha for "anti-party activities"

Mumbai, Jul 14 (PTI) Congress leader and former spokesperson Sanjay Jha has been suspended for "anti-party activities and breach of discipline", the party's Maharashtra unit said on Tuesday.

The entrepreneur-turned-politician's suspension from the Congress comes weeks after he wrote a newspaper article critical of the country's oldest political party.

Jha has been suspended with immediate effect for "anti-party activities and breach of discipline", Maharashtra Congress chief Balasaheb Thorat said in a statement here.

India: Rajasthan political crisis: Sachin Pilot says not joining BJP

New Delhi, Jul 15 (PTI) "I am not joining the BJP," Congress leader Sachin Pilot said on Wednesday, asserting that the speculation about his switching sides was being fuelled by certain leaders in Rajasthan to tarnish his image.

Pilot's remarks come a day after the Congress sacked him as Rajasthan's deputy chief minister and the party's state unit president. Two loyalists of Pilot were also dropped from the state Cabinet.

Srinagar, July 13 (PTI) A bunch of habeas corpus petitions seeking the release of 16 senior leaders of the National Conference (NC) from detention at their residences have been filed by the party's president Farooq Abdullah and vice president Omar Abdullah, who have contended that they were being held in "brazen violation" of the constitutional guarantee of right to liberty.
