India: Nagaland extends lockdown till July 31

Kohima, Jul 11 (PTI) The Nagaland government has decided to extend the ongoing lockdown in the state till July 31, and charge fees for COVID-19 tests and stay at quarantine centres at a later stage.

The ongoing lockdown in the state, which was supposed to be lifted on July 16, was extended for another 15 days at a meeting of the High Powered Committee (HPC) on COVID-19 on Friday.

India: Traders, BJP oppose re-imposition of lockdown in Pune

Pune, July 11 (PTI) Traders and opposition BJP on Saturday expressed displeasure over the Maharashtra government's move to reimpose lockdown in Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad.

Traders association said the decision would lead to unrest among businessmen in the city.

A 10-day lockdwon will be implemented in Pune, Pimpri Chinchwad and rural areas adjoining the Pune municipal limits from July 13 amid the rising cases of coronavirus infection.

India: Amitabh Bachchan tests COVID-19 positive, hospitalised

Mumbai, Jul 11 (PTI) Megastar Amitabh Bachchan on Saturday said he has tested positive for COVID-19 and admitted in the isolation ward of a city hospital.

The 77-year-old actor, who is at the Nanavati hospital, shared his health update on Twitter.

I have tested COVID positive. Shifted to Hospital. Hospital informing authorities, family and staff undergone tests , results awaited, Bachchan tweeted.

"All that have been in close proximity to me in the last 10 days are requested to please get themselves tested, he added.

India: Court allows 62 Malaysian,11 Saudi Tablighis to walk free on fine of Rs 7k and Rs 10K

New Delhi, Jul 10 (PTI) A Delhi court Friday allowed 62 Malaysians and 11 foreigners from Saudi Arabia to walk free on payment of fine of Rs 7,000 and Rs 10,000 each respectively, after they accepted mild charges, under the plea bargain process, related to various violations including visa norms while attending Tablighi Jamaat congregation here during the COVID-19 lockdown.

India: Terrorist Vikas Dubey's killing raises handcuffing issue vis-a-vis SC guidelines on "inhuman" practice

New Delhi, Jul 10 (PTI) The alleged encounter killing of dreaded gangster Vikas Dubey on Friday has kicked up dust over his not being apparently handcuffed by the police, against the backdrop of the Supreme Court's disapproving the practice in various orders, calling it inhuman, unreasonable, over harsh and arbitrary.

The apex court has from time to time issued a slew of directives on the procedure to be followed while handcuffing an undertrial, maintaining that the insurance against escape does not compulsorily require handcuffing.

Indian-American elected delegate to GOP convention for fifth consecutive time

Washington, Jul 11 (PTI) An Indian-American has been elected as a Republican delegate for the fifth consecutive term to the party's August convention in Florida that would formally nominate President Donald Trump as its candidate for the November presidential elections.

The Republican National Convention (RNC) in Jacksonville, Florida is scheduled to be held from August 24 to August 27.

Puducherry, Jul 10 (PTI) Puducherry Assembly Speaker V P Sivakolundhuon Friday ordered disqualification of rebel Congress legislator N Dhanavelou under the provisions of the Anti-Defection Act.

Secretary to Assembly Mounusamy told P T I that the Speaker issued the order disqualifying Dhanavelou as a member of the House invoking provisions of the Anti-Defection Act.

India: Six Naga separatists killed in encounter in Arunachal Pradesh

New Delhi, July 11 (PTI) Six NSCN(IM) insurgents were killed in an encounter with security forces in Khonsa area of Arunachal Pradesh early on Saturday morning, military sources said.

One soldier of Assam Rifles was injured in the operation and his condition was stated to be stable, they said.

India's COVID-19 tally reaches 820,000 with 27,114 new cases, death toll climbs to 22,123

New Delhi, Jul 11 (PTI) With a record single-day increase of 27,114 cases, India's COVID-19 tally zoomed past the eight-lakh mark on Saturday, just four days after crossing the seven-lakh post, according to health ministry data.

This was the eighth consecutive day that COVID-19 cases in the country increased by more than 22,000.

According to data updated at 8 am, the death toll climbed to 22,123 with 519 people succumbing to the disease in 24 hours
