Azerbaijan to evacuate embassy in Iran on Sunday after fatal shooting

BAKU, Jan 29 (Reuters) - Azerbaijan will evacuate embassy staff and family members from Iran on Sunday, the foreign ministry said, two days after a gunman shot dead a security guard and wounded two other people in an attack Baku branded an "act of terrorism".

Police in Tehran have said they had arrested a suspect and Iranian authorities condemned Friday's incident, but said the gunman appeared to have had a personal, not a political, motive.

Azerbaijan evacuates Tehran embassy, blames Iran for attack which killed embassy’s head of security

BAKU, Jan 28 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Azerbaijan on Friday said it was evacuating staff from its embassy in Tehran, blaming Iran for a “terrorist” attack in which the head of security was killed and two guards wounded.

Tehran’s police chief said the man who carried out the attack was motivated by “personal” reasons.

“All responsibility for the attack lies with Iran,” Azerbaijani foreign ministry spokesman Ayxan Hacizada told local media.

He said a recent anti-Azerbaijani campaign in Iranian media had “encouraged the attack.”

Azerbaijani president condemns attack on embassy in Iran as 'terrorist act'

BAKU, January 27. /TASS/: Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev has condemned Friday’s attack on the country’s embassy in the Iranian capital of Tehran as a "terrorist act."

"I fiercely condemn the terrorist attack perpetrated against our embassy in Tehran today," Aliyev wrote on Twitter.

"We demand that this terrorist act be swiftly investigated and the terrorists be punished. Terror against diplomatic missions is unacceptable," the Azerbaijani president added.

Baku ready to hold meeting between Azerbaijan, Armenia, Russia as soon as possible

BAKU, January 20. /TASS/: Azerbaijan is ready to hold the postponed trilateral meeting between the foreign ministers of Azerbaijan, Armenia and Russia as soon as possible, Foreign Minister of Azerbaijan Jeyhun Bayramov told reporters on Friday.

"We are ready to hold the postponed trilateral meeting of the foreign ministers of Azerbaijan, Armenia and Russia as soon as possible. Now everything depends on the other party," the foreign minister said, as quoted by the Baku-based news agency Report.

Azerbaijan to open representative office in Palestine

According to the Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, the Azerbaijani parliament approved the move as a step that reflects the solidarity of the republic with Palestine and the rights of the Palestinian people.
